VolNation Plant with the Paul Bain question

Paul Bain is a 21 year old sophomore who has paid his dues. If his ankle is ok, he should be in the rotation the rest of the season. Following the 5-star flameout we witnessed last week - Paul is a welcome Tennessee Volunteer. It will be something if the walkons and freshmen move up in the depth chart and win 3 more SEC football games. You have to give the staff and squad credit if they can pull that off.

Paul Bain has taken a lot of teasing/ridicule from people on this site. He has not gotten to play much but has had to attend practices and college classes just like the starters. Kudos to the young man for his dedication and his perseverance. Glad he was able to get some snaps last Saturday and hope to see more of him.

I have given Bain a ton of ridicule. Mostly because of some ridiculous fans have elevated a guy based on his looks and name. In all honesty, I really hope he becomes a great player at Tennessee.

When he was coming in, there was a poster that kept singing Wilks' praises in such an overblown way that others started making Chuck Norris type jokes as a smartass response to it. The joke was more about the poster than about Wilks, but it just started snowballing from there.

I know we joke, but in all seriousness, Paul Bain is different from the players we have elevated to legendary status in the past. He is only a SO, has good size, plays at a position of need (as far as 2 deep), and looks like a legitimate SEC player.

His productivity vs. the minutes he played versus Tech was staggering - I had left shortly after he got in there but the radio made it sound like he was making every other tackle. Dude must have a very quick first step/move what have you. What were his stats for the game?

Tackles vs. Tech
Barnett - 1
Kirkland - 1
Bain - 2

That about says it all.

Main reason the Bain jokes got started was he transferred in from Tusculum. Most fans think a skilled waterboy can play on scholarship there. Somebody started a thread asking who he was after seeing his name on the roster, Then, they found his Tusculum profile picture. The whole thing went viral from there.

I always thought it was how MEAN he looked in his picture from Tusculum as well. Dude looked like he ate babies because "You know how much protein is in a baby?" LOL

“Paul Bain, he did a really good job,” Jones said. “I was really proud of Paul. He really played for the first time. He is nursing a slight ankle sprain, so we’ll see how he progresses. But I thought, for playing his first reps at Tennessee, I was really pleased and encouraged by him. He’s a young man who’s a walk-on who’s done a great job, works every day, doesn’t say two words, doesn’t really miss practice. He does a great job on the scout team. And he has some ability, so I was excited to see him be able to perform the way he performed.”

Stripling said Bain “did great,” and he wasn’t surprised to see Bain play well in his first appearance. “Came off the ball, big, physical, made some plays. What a great experience,” Stripling said. “This was his first chance to get on the field. I’m excited about those guys. Here’s a guy that works hard and has worked hard for a couple years just to get that opportunity to go on the field, so it’s exciting."

Huh. Even though I vaguely actually recall the original post on Bain, I thought it was also partly based on the Batman villain.

I mean, that's not an insult at all. That guy's a bad ass. :p

Bain and Kongbo should absolutely be the "poster boys" for next years defense. Bain looking dead serious and Kongbo putting on his snarl.

it was just a natural progression from Rod Wilks (who some will actually claim was the natural progression from our old team weapon, Jim Bob Coooter). the pic was his freshman yr pic, as I recall. once people saw how mean the dude looked, it was a really simple transition. instant legend status.

The thread that started the Paul Bain meme was this one, then followed a few days later by the "The Paul Bain Thread" where the jokes came into full swing...

Yeah, Everyone was POed at how Dontavius Blair was such a letdown as a 4* juco player, posters encouraged Bain to become legendary to show his lazy butt up.

My theory at least.

I am sure that played into the minds of some of us, but some of these posters are old farts who had stopped reading comic books long before the Breaking of Batman.

Yes, he did appear to have a quick initial burst.
