VolNation Plant with the Paul Bain question

I know we joke, but in all seriousness, Paul Bain is different from the players we have elevated to legendary status in the past. He is only a SO, has good size, plays at a position of need (as far as 2 deep), and looks like a legitimate SEC player.

He's only a sophomore? It seems like he's been here like 7 years.

It's all a ruse.. trying to make opponents less wary of our secret weapon

Paul Bain has taken a lot of teasing/ridicule from people on this site. He has not gotten to play much but has had to attend practices and college classes just like the starters. Kudos to the young man for his dedication and his perseverance. Glad he was able to get some snaps last Saturday and hope to see more of him.

I'm just glad the guy got to play. I don't know how long I thought he wasn't even a real person from all the jokes on here.

I agree with all the good stuff you said but I don't think most fans who tease Paul here are dissing him. They are just teasing and that too not in a bad way or even mean way. I would love to hear from Paul on what he thinks. His opinion is the only one that matters in this case. If he doesn't like it, my apologies. If he does, than cool.

Lol Having multiple threads dedicated to the legend of Paul Bain is ridiculing him? The guy is a VolNation rock star!

My hope is that Paul is not seriously injured and has the opportunity to stay healthy and play, contributing in the remaining games.

Main reason the Bain jokes got started was he transferred in from Tusculum. Most fans think a skilled waterboy can play on scholarship there. Somebody started a thread asking who he was after seeing his name on the roster, Then, they found his Tusculum profile picture. The whole thing went viral from there.

Yep, the "photo" is what made it really take off.

I'm not sure why some keep insisting that it's making fun of or bashing him. That pic is the coolest and most bada$$ portrait of a football player I've ever seen. And what's even cooler is he has the potential to be memorable on the field for Tennessee.

it was just a natural progression from Rod Wilks (who some will actually claim was the natural progression from our old team weapon, Jim Bob Coooter). the pic was his freshman yr pic, as I recall. once people saw how mean the dude looked, it was a really simple transition. instant legend status.

The thread that started the Paul Bain meme was this one, then followed a few days later by the "The Paul Bain Thread" where the jokes came into full swing...

We NEED this guy at this point in the season.

Have you seen our depth chart? I look forward to seeing him in action and hearing his name mentioned by the announcers - in a good way.

Hopefully the mention of his name means we will be tearing our opponent apart. :clapping:

I don't think there is any teasing/ridicule. Personally, I'm always for the guy who gives everything he's got. Underdog or Superstar. Everyone knows he was the first to lose his strip last year. That's voted on by the players. They saw what he gave every day and immediately earned their respect. Subsequently, he earned our respect.
Players like Bain should earn the right to at least once, show everyone what they are like on game day. Some players are great in practice and can't seem to perform on game day. Others are just the opposite.
Bain, keep dishing out the pain. We'll keep building your legend and you can keep backing it up on the field.

I don't know if he knows. Actually, more teasing than ridicule. For a while, it was hard to think of him as real. Seeing him on TV, I was like wow.. it's him.

Sort of the same feeling Dorothy got when she finally saw OZ.

Plus in his initial picture he looked to be a 35 year old hard as nails NFL linebacker.

Edit: Sorry, just realized this had been adequately covered.

Jim Bob, Wilks and now Bain are VN'S equivalent to Aggies 12th man. No disrespect was/is intended. We want (dream of) them succeeding. They are the unsung heroes of VN fandom and legends in our minds. To have one actually play and be mentioned in the presser is awesome.
