The simple fact that most people are overlooking in this whole media storm over nothing is that CLK had three very specific targets in mind (and we the fans were not one of them)

1. Boosters
2. Players & Recruits
3. Urban Meyer

1. If Lane wants to keep his job for any amount of time, he must have the boosters behind him. If he makes a couple of remarks that fire them up and leave them feeling better about UT football than they have since 2001, he doesn't care what the conference or national media say about it. Also, he knew what he was doing and said it in jest (he made a very impressive score on his recruiting exam).

2. CLK shot off at the mouth and challenged the biggest, baddest guy on the field. This makes him look like a young cocky fool to the fanbase, but we aren't the important ones right now. 18 yr old alpha males that want to go out on the field and beat the best teams in the nation, however, see a coach who isn't scared of the bully on the playground. This persona is exactly what he needs to help bring in some blue-chippers and give our current players the fire they need to compete with schools like Florida.

3. Sometimes when you challenge the bully to a fight, you get beat up. CLK might just take that fall this coming season, but he can't risk looking like he accepts his role as a second place team to Florida. This is where the fanbase seems to still have the personality of CPF. For the last two years, Florida beat UT into the ground without mercy. CPF stayed calm and talked about film and gameplans. To paraphrase a very good coach: Say all you want about X's and O's, most football games are won by big angry men. CPF just didn't get the troops fired up. He was a great guy, but it's not enough to get the boys to follow you into battle, they have to be ready and motivated to fight once they are there.

In short, CLK doesn't care about winning the fans right now for one reason... he can't. If he produces on the field this fall, we will love him. If he fails miserably, we will hate him. Either way, we won't care less about this incident, but the boosters, players, and opposing coaches will take from this that Lane won't back down and let them have their way with his team. Win or Lose, he's all fight.

I'm sorry, but that makes absolutely no sense.

Question: What has the team's response been to Coach Kiffin ruffling some feathers in the SEC?

Berry: It's great to have a coach with so much confidence in us. Our team has been working harder than ever because he's making us feel we can compete with anyone. He has raised the bar on and off the field.

Does that make sense to you?

i'm pretty sure he has grown a lot of support from the fans. New blood has already sparked fire in the fanbase. Not exactly sure where you are coming from??

You honestly think Kiffin doesn't care about fan support?

Come on. Of course he does!

There will be 100,000 there at the home opener.

W's will take care of keeping 100,000 there....

But what's that have to do with the fact you continue to be a troll?

LG, are you one of those people who is really really smart, but doesn't have common sense? (And I swear I don't mean it as an insult.)

It wouldn't to you...

85, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. To think CLK has no interest in the fanbase is absolutely ridiculous. I'm pretty sure we are more pumped about next season than we have been since the year following the 98' NC.

To put it in perspective, how many people here are going or heavily considering attending the O&W game this spring?

Yes... but he knows that he has fan support....you are talking to them right now...whats your point?

My point is that he can't win the fans in the offseason anyway.

Everyone on here keeps saying the same thing: "Prove it on the field".

What he can win right now is booster support (to keep him secure in his job), player support (that they can hang with Florida and other big college programs), and recruit interest (he's not afraid to take on the top guys).

Making Meyer want to run up the score (which he obviously would have anyway) is an acceptable consequence if these tactics pay off in the other 11 games next season.

His attempt at an English lesson yesterday makes me believe he isn't as intelligent as he tries to come across...

in truth his actions have won him a great many fans. And some detractors.

He has had a polarizing effect already.

Sure everyone wants to see results, but the Kiffin Chronicles are indeed impacting the fanbase.

Nice! I didn't see this.....Did they have an article or something on this?

lane knew that the camera's were in the room and the media was there. To think comments he made weren't going to see the public eye would be ignorant on his part.

you say we will hate him if we don't win games next year. Speak for yourself! It's all the negative vol fans out there that need to take a look at reality for a minute and realize that rebuilding is exactly that.

What CLK is instilling in the team, staff, and fans this offseason is great. That is a new fire, passion, and of course this all leads to motivation for next season. It would be dumb to say that in all Kiffins efforts thus far that he has not tried to win support of the fans.

As been said and written ad nauseam, he has excited the fan base and team and the next step will be to back it up. One camp has doomed him to failure already and the other camp is waiting to see what happens.

Sure everyone wants to see results, but the Kiffin Chronicles are indeed impacting the fanbase.

If he continues to be brash and cocky and loses 8 games next year: Everyone who is crazy for him now will be calling for him to be replaced by Gruden.

If he becomes CPF part two and is quiet and respectful like some on here seem to want then loses 8 games next year: Everyone will be calling for him to be replaced by Gruden.

If he continues to be brash and cocky and wins 10 games: All of his detractors will call him a genius

If he shuts up and behaves like a perfect gentleman and wins 10 games: Everyone will still call him a genius.

What he does now will, when all is said and done, have virtually no effect on what the fanbase thinks of him this time next year, but it does effect the views of recruits and players he will be in contact will all summer prior to kickoff this fall. I believe that he is playing to those young men and ignoring the cries of some of the fanbase for now.

Very well put and my only disagreement is that I think he wants to let the UT fans that were tired of the CPF way know that he is going to change things... so he is playing to some(most) of the fanbase.

You are a major troll/pot stir-er that obviously has nothing better to do than try to pretend that you are a superior being. I hope you will still be here and trolling when TN is winning the SEC and NC in the next few years... your days are numbered... count on it!

There's a third camp that blindly believe that he cannot fail. I'd say the breakdown is about like this:

Cannot fail: 15%
Doomed to fail: 15%
Waiting to see what happens: 70%

The part that made no sense was when he said Kiffin does not care about the opinion of the fanbase. He's a head football coach in the SEC. How cannot he not care what the fans of his team think?
