Vol Offensive Playcalling and the Irony of it all...

Thought I had heard that. I don't understand why we abandon the run at the drop of a hat. Against UGA and Arkansas we didn't abandon the run and we all saw what happened then.

Playing with a 2 TD lead will do that.

5 wide, but nothing vertical?

That's not all that different from a run with one exception... it opens up space for rushing the ball.

Defense simply covers width of field. As they spread to cover the field, it opens up space for the run. It's all run or short pass.

Go vertical on 1st down... that's my suggestion. Is that the pattern you guys are recommending or are you suggesting we need to try off tackle right or left on first down more?

If we don't rush enough, how can you explain Foster's success—almost 1K this year alone?

We won on Cut's calls yesterday. I liked them.

offense was dormant after 1st series until 4th quarter. problem is we have nobody to stretch the field and no playmaker at wr.. sure we have good possesion wr but noone who can turn a game around so we dink everybody to death, so run the football if its working then open up your passing game . common sense tells you when your running it down there throat they will stack the box and then you can get it up the field

Precisely... and playing 2 TD's down when your defense looks transparent makes a lot of teams pass more.

Our losses to Cal, FL, and AL were more about defensive issues than about offensive play calling. Our defense is better now, so there is hope!

Marginally better. Big test this week in seeing how much better. Kentucky runs a similar offense to what has give us trouble this year.

Good point. But if you are able to run the ball and score instead of pass, you leave less time for your transparent defense to screw up.

Your right our defense has improved, at every position. I would like to see more pressure on the qb and more consistency. Still a noticable improvement.

I agree we need to stretch the field. Whether that is play calling or personnel is what I don't know, but it seems like we have some talent on the sideline. I don't buy the idea that running a fly pattern is too hard for a freshman. Can these frosh just not catch the ball?

Heck, even Todd Helton scored a deep ball on Georgia to win a game at Georgia during PM's freshman year. We must have somebody who could run under one of Ainge's passes, correct?

I think the constant finesse passing is what is hurting Ainge. When he is allowed to open it up somewhat, like in the 4th Q of the Vandy game, he is very accurate. When he has to make two yard passes constantly, he starts throwing wild. I have no idea what causes that, but I have seen this pattern in most games.

In retrospect, of course, in all three games we should have been trying to run the clock from the first snap.

That's sounds consistent with what I've seen during the games.

I wonder if the absence of Meachem is the same problem for Ainge that PM has without Harrison.

For the Vols, can't a guy like Rogan run under the ball? We used to teach track stars how to do that in the 70's so surely we can teach football players in the 2000's.

We've got track stars on the bench right now...

We only had 322 yards of offense. We had two different stretches of over 15 minutes where we didn't score. Did you watch the game? We definitely did not move the ball that well.

And TOP is the most overrated stat in football.

No I listened...But we only punted three times. This is from the officual stats. The first 15 stretch you refer to was due to a Vandy drive that took 9.02 and a missed fg.

I do not see the other 15 stretch inless you count the half.
