I'm sorry but grammar and sentence structure does reflect a person's intellect 98% of the time. Call me ivory towered, or elitist, or just plain educated.

... and this conclusion was reached by someone with nothing more than his/her own anecdotal determinations to support it. One of the first things educational institutions attempt to get across is critical thinking. The writer's conclusion reflected very little of that in my opinion.

William from McMinnville probably speaks English just fine for his area of the country. William may actually be one of the real rocket scientists that works at AEDC in Tullahoma at the UT Space Institute, or he may be a regular joe that builds air conditioners at Carrier. My point is that you can't tell anything about a persons intelligence based on their accent.

Supposedly Ma Bell says middle Ohio has the most perfect English in the US but according to some that means they are the smartest in the US too because they speak the most proper English.

I know it doesn't matter either way. It's just one of my pet peeves. I frequent many different boards and they are all casual. Anything goes from poor spelling to the newer text typing. It's like a real conversation. Then you come over hear and it's like you are back in English Comp class LOL.

It's here...Not hear

Oh My God!!... What has this board done to me??...Why did I just do that??...I'm sorry...For real..

Just kidding...I agree with everything you posted...

Many people in the south justify improper English by tethering it to southern culture. I talk with an accent and often struggle with the English language but I (at least) try to speak properly. I would add that the size of a persons vocabulary is often a strong indicator of their intelligence. Besides all of that, can't they even stop for a few moments and think of a good question before they call in (or any question at all for that matter).

I would like to add a little to your statement to try and make it a little more accurate. A deep vocabulary is indicative of intelligence AND a good education. This is because a high level of intelligence often correlates with the ability, and thus the want, to learn. So yes, people that speak with proper (or as close as possible to) English are often both educated and intelligent. Speaking improperly doesn't indicate a lack of intelligence, but can indicate a lack of education.

To suggest that everyone who speaks improperly or with a deep accent/drawl would be naive. Its an exception/rule situation, not an either/or.

A whole different way of looking at it is from the business/casual standpoint. I guarantee anyone on this board will tell you that they speak differently when they are around their friends versus their colleagues or coworkers. One of the smartest/most intelligent people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing was my high school English teacher. His biggest pet peeve was grammar. We spent half of a semester on it. He made it very clear though that grammar was only a priority in business/professional situations. In his personal life he could have cared less. He said he could cuss up a storm and yak with the best of his country friends.

Even at school if you didn't know who he was and heard him in the hallway you would have never in your life guessed that he is a college educated English teacher. He has the deepest drawl I have ever heard, to the point that it took a few days if not weeks for his classes to completely understand him. I honestly thought it was a joke when I first heard him, but you will never find another man that I respect more for both his knowledge and ability to teach.

Guess we could issue teleprompters to each Vols Call caller. That would make them all acceptable speakers.

One suggestion however, to the show. Maybe a reminder at the beginning of each show that each caller could help speed things up and keep it interesting by not doing the, "hey, coach, how you doing" and the hello's and how you doing to everyone on the show. Instruct them to ask the question and we will just assume they are going to get off and listen.

Also, please listen to the entire show if you are going to call in and please don't ask a question which has already been asked.

Precise; concise; and be nice!

I think that may say more about you than him LOL.

I don't care if he can even speak english as long as he is good with the knife and has good outcomes.

He can be a wus, a jerk, or a nice guy, doesn't matter to me if he is a good surgeon.

I am not going to him for his accent or lack of accent, I am going to him for his intelligence and his surgical ability.

That's one of my pet peeves with this board, people try to make judgements on other people based on spelling, sentence structure, accents etc. It's reeks of ivory tower elitism. I will say that I am fortunate to live in an area where these two worlds collide and nothing is more fun than to see the face of one of those proper speaking elitist who thinks he is so much more enlightened than the common people completely and totally demolished by some intelligent guy that sounds more like Forrest Gump than the physics professor he really is. That's pretty fun to watch.

This is a good post. Some of the smartest people I have ever known were as country as cornbread.

Shouldn't be too hard to send each one a teleprompter, being that the same 5 idiots call every week.
