VN Baseball Coaching Search 2011

For those casual baseVol fans, a little recap of the day's events.

In case you live on another planet, Todd Raleigh was fired in an eight minute meeting. No papers were signed or Jimmy Hyams could be wrong....again.

The sixth nationwide search in the last few years is underway, this time for AD Hamilton's second baseball coach.

One former UT player, Javi Herrera, on the radio this morning, said that he and other players felt "exiled" from the program. I've heard for the past few days what a money loser baseball is at UT. All the more reason to have our former Vol Baseball players in the fold. It makes no sense to me that some of these MLB players would be shut out, when their donations financially, but more importantly, their time and presence could be used for the good of UT baseball.

He also talked in depth about Chris Burke, a glowing endorsement. Burke is all Vol, VFL, but is that enough? Maybe it is. Will we find out? That's another question. As a Vol fan, I know one thing, I'd like to see Burke and all those guys around. I want them to feel welcome, they should feel welcome and it's a huge oversight that they don't.

As for the search, it would appear that Dave Serrano and Dan McDonnell have been contacted. If that is true it is a measure of good news. It would take a lot of money to get either of those guys to Tennessee. Is Mike Hamilton and the BOT ready to make that committment?

Including Raleigh's $330,000 + buyout, it sounds like we'd be talking over a million dollars the first year. $750-800,000 for those guys, who are both in dandy situations currently. Are those guys, the Nick Saban of baseball? I don't know, it's not my job to know. But if they are, just pay, please for the love of....

Twitter is buzzing a bit about Holbrook from USCe, could that be a possibility? Sure, anything's possible. It's also possible they could give him a raise and a new title at SC. We'll have to wait.

Other possible candidates mentioned today in all areas of social media include Pierce, Bakich, Finwood, Bell, Evans and Butler and several former Vol baseball players with MLB experience.

In all, not a bad day. Two top HC's and a top assistant know we're interested in them and they have interest in UT. Well... "know" might be too strong a word. It's a coaching search complete with smoke screens, clandestine meetings, planes, multiple phones, and leaked misinformation. Did I also mention the Raleigh era is over? That's good news, we can be certain.

It will all get a bit crazier in the coming days, that's what we KNOW for sure. But, hey, it's just another day at the ball park for a UT fan these days. GBO!!!

I saw a strange one that I hadn't seen anywhere else. well not strange...Larry Simcox. I thought he just went along with Delmonico, but he's opened up an instructional facility in Knoxville.

Simcox is very happy and has absolutely no interest in the job.

I always felt it was an odd career move, as I was under the impression that Lawson was fairly well regarded in the scouting industry. I think this particular situation was the main reason he took the assistant coaching job in the first place- the writing was on the wall in regards to Raleigh, and he wanted a chance to run an SEC program.

I know some on this board really, REALLY do not like Coach Lawson, so please do not take this as me lobbying for him to be named the next head baseball coach at UT, it's just some speculation on the situation. Go Vols

Lawson left scouting because of the time involved as I understand it, he was gone from family around 200 days last year. Also he missed the coaching side of the game as well but mainly it was the time away from family. I wondered the same thing and questioned the move as well.

This is true but it was still a risky move considering TR's status. He was advised of this but still took the chance. Plus the fact that he ws considered a rising star in the Padres organization and could of moved up to the front office at some point. Its my understanding that he already has offers to go back to the pros should he choose too.

Yes this is true.

Matt Stewart of CSS tweeted that three early candidates are Mike Bell, Burke, and Serrano. Also says that Chad Holbrook of USCe will definitely listen to Nebraska should they come calling.

Kendall Rogers had some interesting things to tweet as well. Saying that if everything comes to fruition, Vol fans will be ecstatic and that Serrano is a definite possibility. Here's his twitter if anyone wants to read, says he will have more news today. http://twitter.com/#!/KendallRogersPG

I have a hard time believing that Burke is getting any consideration for this job.

From what I hear Burke stepped on some toes in jockeying for the job and its made some supporters unhappy. TIFWIW!

Once you're in pro baseball, you have no problem getting back in if you ever leave. I'm in no way a Lawson fan. But he could have a job today.

Who is that saying it would take $750-800k for Serrano or McDonnell? That's absurd that either are worth that and absurd that it would take that much. No way they would require a doubling or tripling of salary.

That figure is mainly about McDonnell. He's making at least 400 grand probably more. He's turned down everyone that's come calling including an offer from NIKE U. He also is in a fine situation at Louisville. The top of the SEC is getting close to that kind of money.

I don't know if we'll pay $650,000 + to hire a coach for the baseball team, but here's what it's costing us to pay the last two NOT to coach the baseball team.

Yeah he's definitely making good money. Its believed he wants back in the SEC so like NYY said it may not take as much to get him. It'll easily take a raise i just don't see it being as significant as being the highest paid coach in the SEC. Turning Oregon down may have to do more with the fact that you're starting a program from scratch and his desire to remain in the South. That's all assumption by myself. But given that he graduated from the Citadel and has remained in the South since, its a reasonable assumption i believe.

Former Vol pitcher Craig Cobb on AM 990 taking about the program. Backs up Herrera's comments on having minimal contact with the baseball program. He mentions Serrano and Holbrook as guys he thinks should be contacted.

Reading great things about Holbrook. Sounds like he could be the next coach at USCjr in about 5 years if he's still there. Sounds like a good coach and recruiter. Would be pleased with him or Serrano.

You probably know a lot more about this than I do. Is this guy a winner, is he as close to a sure thing as there is. I don't know. If he is, I'd rather get a guy that CAN compete in our division than go out and hire a guy who MAY be able to do it for less money. The latter is what we have been doing. When it works it's great, but when it doesn't there's buy-outs.

Wilkerson said on the radio after listing all the possible former Vol candidates, and I'm paraphrasing here...it's hard to get past the name Serrano to look at other candidates, he's taken two teams to the CWS.
