I probably just missed the discussion earlier, but with Frank gone, is Elander coaching the pitchers? What kind of effect will not having Frank do to the pitching this year?

One difference seems to be more emphasis on holding runners on-base.

I think Frank was right to focus college pitchers on just pitching, with the idea that getting them good enough in that skill set would provide them a ticket to the minor leagues, where other skill sets could be added.

It isn't so much that Frank is no longer right, but that now the pathway to the majors has changed--and possibly, today's best high school pitchers arrive further developed than they were 10 years ago. I'm guessing that Reynolds' coaching has been informed more by current trends. Just a guess.


edit: Of course, maybe the market--the money being spent on and to college players--has changed the demands for higher quality and a fuller skill set. People spend/invest money to gain a return, and for college programs today that means consistent, year-to-year pursuit of national championships.

Vitello brought Josh Reynolds over from Cincinnati after the 2024 season with the idea that he'd be Frank's replacement. He was Frank's assistant for a year and has now been promoted to pitching coach.

The only reason anyone in the national media is doubting anything about us is because Vitello is no longer here. If Frank had decided to retire but Tony V stayed, then we'd still be getting our deserved national attention.

A couple of other good reasons for the ranking:
1) TN is also one of the most inexperienced team in the SEC. The BaseVols lost a ton of Plate Appearances and Innings Pitched to the Draft and the Portal.
2) in addition to CTV, additional coaches or key support staff lost includes Frank Anderson, Quentin Eberhardt, Luke Bonfield, and Sean McCann. That’s huge attrition on a coaching staff.

UT Roster retention rankings:
167th out of 300
13th of 16 in SEC
”It’s roster retention, not portal additions that determine the highest increases in winning percentage”. Winning teams need a strong returning core supplemented by key portal additions.

Looking back at '24, we were in a very similar spot. We were replacing almost everyone on the field besides CMo, Burke & Ensley (Dreiling, Tears, and Stark, etc., had flashed, but weren't consistent yet). On the mound, we were replacing the entire rotation outside of Beam.

We managed to bridge those gaps by hitting the portal for the right pieces while trusting our internal development for the rest. I see the same blueprint this year. I’m not saying we’re going to win a National Championship, but the staff has done a great job balancing portal additions with player development to fill our needs.
