Tennessee coach Tony Vitello says 'nothing is done' with San Francisco Giants manager job​

Tony Vitello is a candidate for the San Francisco Giants manager position, but the Tennessee baseball coach does not have a deal in place with the Giants.

"Nothing is done," the Vols coach told Knox News on Oct. 18.

Vitello said he does not have an offer from the Giants at this time.

The Vols held a fall scrimmage on Oct. 18 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Vitello addressed his team in right field following the scrimmage and openly discussed the reports that he is set to be the Giants' next manager.

Vitello led the Vols to their first national title, winning the 2024 College World Series in one of UT's three trips to Omaha in his historic tenure. He also coached Tennessee to two SEC regular-season titles and two SEC Tournament titles, sweeping the crowns in both 2022 and 2024.

He would be replacing Bob Melvin as the Giants' manager. Melvin was fired on Sept. 29 after two seasons. He went 161-163 with an 81-81 mark in the 2024 season.

Vitello is 341–131 in eight seasons at Tennessee.

Lol that sounds like "I haven't officially signed the contract"...i.e. it's technically correct but not really.

Tony’s always given credit to his staff for his success here and my biggest concern if he leaves is he takes most of em with him , that would really suck , I think Erlander is more than capable if he can keep most of the current staff and recruits , it’s been an incredible run and I’m selfishly hopeful Tony stays

Doesn’t come around ever. He’s the first to ever make the move with no professional experience.

Wasn't there some post or rumor about them diverting money from his team to the lady vols? Might be wrong, but I could have sworn there was something to do with money being diverted. All the money and work on LNS, too. Just thought he'd be a lifer here. Hope White is willing to make him the highest paid in college baseball before it's too late....if it already isn't. Dunno...maybe he's just tired of recruiting?
