This is the latest information on getting a University of Tennessee license plate. I was asked to pass this information along. It has been in the works for quite some time and has taken way too long, in my opinion.

This was the message passed along to me:
We currently have 133 applications. We need 217 more to get the process going. If you are on the fence of getting one, now is the time to get this license plate in VA. If you have a spouse's car, then get one for them. Don't renew or change plates in a year, just help us get to 350. If you are waiting for the license plate to become a reality before getting one, don't wait, as we won't get one until we get to 350. We have over 600 alumni in the Central Virginia area. This shouldn't be an issue for our group only to be able to get the applications that we need. The University has decided to do one last push. If we don't get the numbers, then we will refund the money to those that have sent in the applications and probably will not ever get a UT license plate in VA. Keep this in mind as you see Auburn or Florida plates and wonder why UT doesn't have one.
Here is the LINK to the information you'll need to order one. Let's get this done Virginia Vols. We've waited long enough.

It is unbelievable to me that we are struggling
to get Tennessee license plates in Virginia. A few of the schools that have special plates in Virginia are: Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Fla State, Penn State, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Duke, Villanova, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Ga Tech, East Carolina, Maryland...and more.
Embarrassing that we may not be able to get the numbers needed.

Yes, that's pretty embarrassing. Vol fans need to step it up.

Same problem in North Carolina. The largest alumni assn. outside of Knoxville resides in Charlotte and we cannot get plates because apparently they don't care. We have the numbers just no dedication. My wife and I ordered our plates over a year ago but no one else seems to be on board.

Sad.

The alumni association in Charlotte is larger than the alumni association in Nashville? I'm not sure that's right.

Also I heard a few years ago that every SEC school had it's largest out-of-state alumni association in Atlanta (I think the exception was Arkansas, whose largest out-of-state alumni base was in Dallas).

If there are 600 UT alumni in Central Virginia, I've got to believe there are at least that many across the state line from Johnson City. Come on Virginia, step up!

I'd say there are as many Vol fans in SW Va & W NC as there are Cavs & Heels....it's very surprising there isn't already a plate there! I used to live in SC & there were 3 teams with lots of fans there...SC, Clem&son & the Vols! Glad they finally have a plate, Especially since you can get an out of state school plate in TN for about 12-15 different schools!

We need a Tennessee Vols plate in Texas. Anyone know if people have tried to get one here in the lone star state? It would be nice if it had the Tennessee Vols logo on it, not just the power T because Texas also has a T...

Yes, there are quite a few here in SWVA. Just no organized group.

Which part of SWVA are you OWB? I'm in Roanoke. From what I understand we had an alumni association years ago but it is no more.

Do you know if you have to pay $25 every year for the plates or is that just a one time fee?

Some answers to some of the questions that have been going on - I'm the UT Central VA President, who is in charge of collecting the money and applications - we are up to 140 now. There is a link to the a FAQs when you go to the license plate application http://web.utk.edu/~utaa/email/110715-valicense2. The $25 is recurring, but in VA you have to pay $10/year anyway, so the cost is really $15/year in addition to what you normally would pay. We have been running e-mail blasts to our chapters in DC, Richmond and Hampton Roads. No chapter in SW VA. We are hoping that the people in that area can pass along any information to friends and alumni to help us get to the goal of 350. We have posted on our facebook page University of Tennessee Alumni Association- Richmond and UTDC Alumni. Please spread the word in SW VA as well. If you need more direct information, contact me at richmond.va.vols@gmail.com

Let's make this happen in VA.

Yep. More than sad.
2 plates for us as well.
This latest time in 2012 was the 3rd time we've been through the process in NC over the years.

I'm currently in Abingdon. Just moved back from Indiana and I'm thinking about moving to Knoxville. Not until we get these plates done, though.

Hope austexvol sees this...

Thanks Peach! I clicked on the link. I saw the the UT plate, and I clicked on it, but it indicated it is unavailable. So, I'll call them ASAP to see what's going on with the plate. Thanks for the info!
