Virginia Tech vs UT game discussion thread

Oh Jesus God PLEASE!!! UT/VT could become the new Ohio State/Michigan or Notre Dame/USC, only better because neither team SUCKS! Plus whichever team wins would get a major springboard toward a huge season. And if we did it at BMS like has been suggested we would own the record for highest attended college football game year after year.
Uh.. I'm not sure how 2 teams which have played 1 time in the last 70 years could compare to a rivalry which a lot of people consider to be college football's greatest.

That's a huge honor. Seeing as how there's 5 BCS bowls (including title game). I don't see why UT/VT wouldn't be above Oregon State/BYU. Yawn. But not bad being one of the top 10 bowls of the year, and top 3 non-BCS bowls!

Yeah i thought it was really cool to be ahead of teams like Oklahoma, USC, Miami, Pittsburg and Stanford

Mike Hamilton and Jim Weaver (VT's AD) discussed this during their presser for the CFA bowl on Monday.

Basically, said the Bristol Bowl rumor of a few years ago was actually in the works. After a few conversations, according to Hammy, the people at BMS sort of never got back to anyone. It was a one time thing at the Speedway and fell through. The track infield has since been reconfigured and is no longer a possibility.

Tech fans like to promote the myth that UT refused to play them. Because it was coming from VT fans, most UT fans didn't give the myth the time of day. Frank Beamer commented that he never really saw how the thing was going to work because everyone would've needed binoculars to see the game.

Anyway, the ADs of both schools set the record straight this week. It WAS going to happen, both schools wanted it to happen, but it fell through. Money payout to each school was to be $20 million.

They also said they have been working at scheduling a regular season matchup between the schools at some point. Schedules are set for both schools for about the next decade. Unlikely to happen anytime soon in regular season.[/QUOTE]

This really could be a great new rivalry. It reminds me of what might've been able to happen if we kept up our rivalry with West Virginia (although I think WVU is going to fall off the college football world fairly soon). The best thing about maybe getting this rivalry started is I know UT fans and as bad as I've heard other teams talk about how mean ya'll are it really isn't that bad. Some friendly jawing is all I've ever really run into and that's what make college football so much fun. An annual home and home would be pretty awesome. We could call it the Appalachian Bowl or something like that or I think someone mentioned the Hokie/Smokey showdown.

With this much time to prepare CMK will be ready. Hope the offense can stay sharp over the 1 month layoff. If they can Vols 31----- VT 21

With all due respect, as much as VT needs a solid game against an SEC school to call "a rivalry," we neither need a rivalry nor would we consider a game vs. VT a rivalry.

Don't worry, UVA will get things turned around.

I just see this as a tight game talent wise with a slight edge to VT. And that's because of ST. Specifically the kicker.

QB- TN
RB- Even
WR- TN (bec of stocker)
OL- VT
DL- even
LB- VT (injuries)
Secondary- TN
ST- VT (by far)
Coaches- TN (of course)

TN- 31
VT- 24

For some reason I think BB has over 100 all purpose yards as CLK begins to expand his role.

Last night, I had a dream.

I dream of one play in the upcoming bowl.

Tyrod lines up in the gun. Pressure comes from Dan Williams busting through the line. Tyrod rolls and gets hit by two guys as he throws, causing his pass to float and flutter in the air, right into the hands of Eric Berry, who then runs about 30-35 yards to paydirt.

Record broken, all the orange busts out in a booming "Eric Berry" chant, drowning out all of the Hokies.

Haha, that and he's about 11 yards shy of the NCAA interception return yards record.

Sweet.

I (obviously) hope he doesn't break it, but good for him if he does.

Tyrod's only thrown four picks, and one was hail mary at the end of the half against Georgia Tech. But if we get down early to you guys then Tyrod will have to sling it more, which will up EB's chances.

Either way, I look for Tyrod to throw away from EB all night.

And I can just imagine the competing "Er-ic Ber-ry" and "Ry-an Will-iams" chants now...

To the VT fans on here, do you guys run more I-form or shotgun? I have been in an argument with some people about this as I thought you guys ran more of a prostyle offense.

Our special teams have changed, but I wouldn't say they've declined. We rely a lot more on the return game than on the punt block game now because we're recruiting the talent to break big returns, which can be just as effective as blocking a punt but less likelihood of a 15-yard personal foul that prolongs an opponent's drive.

But there is no excuse for the dropoff in blocked field goals and PAT's. I think Beamer is getting soft in his older years, not going after field goals and PAT's as aggressively as he used to.

Those two things seem to contradict each other a little bit, or at least your attitude towards them does. Maybe you're right though and it's more of a change in philosophy, I don't follow VT well enough to say with much conviction one way or the other. I just know the Tech fans I'm friends with don't share that attitude. They see the current era of ST play as being below average from teams of the late 90's-early 00's.

We run out of the I when we can. Our favorite formation is being in the I with 2 TEs and a FB.

At the beginning of the year when we would line up in the shotgun it was either a mid to long range pass, flanker screen, or QB draw. Now we are starting to line up more with 2 RBs(we have a lot of studs back there) and run some option out of it.

Edit: About the RBs. Darren Evans is back to going full speed in practice. He probably won't play due to precautions, but you never know.

This season - especially as it's progressed - we've run more shotgun, especially since our fullback Kenny Jefferson got injured. I think I-form is still technically our base package though.

And Stinespring still has an infatuation with the jumbo set, where he invariably shifts both TEs prior to the snap.
