Virginia Tech vs UT game discussion thread

I look for Hardesty and Williams to both have big games, as both defenses have been susceptible against the run. Not much passing here against two top notch secondaries. Look for Danny Coale to have the most receiving yards as Berry will no doubt be covering Jarrett Boykin most of the night and Tyrod will throw away from him. Also look for Greg Boone to haul in some receptions after being AWOL most of the year.

This one might come down to motivation, and if it does that's problematic for VT. UT probably wants this one more to prove they're on their way back to elite status. VT was thinking BCS. Maybe Beamer and Foster can rip their shirts off Hulk Hogan style and get the boys frothing at the mouth.

Wow. A thread that is actually discussing a football game rather than the fact that we (like every other school in the country) have attractive females as hostesses for recruits...BRILLIANT!

I believe this game may come down to who is more physical on the line of scrimmage. Ryan Williams and Montario Hardesty dont need much to have some big runs.

I'm sorry for the afflicted family members. Maybe they can be put out of their misery mercifully.

Our OL has made incredible improvements from the barely high school status it has had in previous years, but it still isn't where it needs to be. It won't be extremely hard to get pressure on Tyrod, but it will be more difficult to sack him and contain him once you push him out of the pocket.

Curt Newsome's o-lines have been great at run blocking and bad and defending the pass rush. RMFW could probably get the single season rushing record at VT (he needs 111 yards), but true to form watch for Bryan Stinespring to abandon a working rushing game for a passing game that just isn't there.

This game might come down to Bryan Stinespring trying to figure out Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2, and if that' s the case we might be screwed.

Haha i feel famous.
I haven't had a chance to watch much UT football this year. I hope to watch some games on 360 once exams pass.
How has UT's defense played this year? I could look up stats but they can be so misleading. I know y'all played UF and Bama close (and should've beaten bama) so i know you have a good team.
Hopefully you will see more than you want soon!

A couple of Coach O wannabees?

I agree. If the hokies are flat, we're in for a long night. They need that razor sharp edge and focus. This is a big game. Look at the Bama and Florida games. UT has the studs and the talent. Rankings are a function of the body of work (somewhat) and UT had a slow start. Crompton has come along well this year.

Tyrod was sacked 27 times this year which ranks 20th in the country. May not be too difficult, especially when you got the best defensive player in all of college football...ERIC BERRY!

Our o-line is not good at defending the pass rush, yet Stinespring continues to call slow-developing 3- and 5-step drop passes, and Tyrod gets killed. It's like our version of Fulmer's prevent defense. You scream at the TV, but for some reason he just doesn't listen.

With Eric Berry on the field we'd better sell the play action like a pro and/or roll the pocket consistently on pass plays.

I've heard much concern about special teams from tenn fans. Is that solely based on the 2 blocked field goals against bama or has it been an ongoing problem all season?
Missed/blocked FGs have been a problem all year. We also gave up a KO return for a TD, and a blocked punt for a safety against Georgia. Our coverage has been very inconsistent. Beamer ball may not be what it used to be, but I fear that you guys could have a field day against our special teams.

If you guys are having trouble covering kick returns, squib kick EVERYTHING. Dyrell Roberts and David Wilson are lethal on kick returns and Jayron Hosley is just as good on punt returns.

Hearing this pleases me.

We already played the best defensive player in country. SUH.

I live in Jefferson City, TN and I've seen several UT games and of course it's all over around here. It's kind of hard to find an unbiased opinion of the Vols down here but from what I can see they have a decent offensive game. I'd be suprised if they're run defense can do much against our run offense. Crompton is a middle of the road quarterback and if he isn't tryin to force a win he can manage the game. I don't see much of a threat from the passing game from the Big Orange. They're running game with Hardesty and Brown (especially if Brown is fully recovered) is going to be a little more dicey and really test our linebackers. I think Grimm will be up to the task and I think Rivers is a great up and comer but depending who we have on that other spot we could be in trouble Gibson is holding his own, but I think Jake Johnson is hungry to have a big game (I've got no real reason for this, but that I've spoken with his mom about it and that it's killing him that he hasn't been able to contribute the way he wants to).

Our offense vs. the Tennessee defense I think is going to be the real key to the game. If Tyrod plays the way that he has down the stretch we are going to have an easier time, but that all depends on the play of the o-line too. I will say about Taylor though he has limited his mistakes and seems to be taking the role of game manager (although when called upon he has the skills to make a big play: see plays at the end of the Nebraska game and the "almost sacked" pass to Boykin during the NC State game). I think the over all key is not getting away from the running game once it gets rolling (if it gets rolling). Williams is one of the most dynamic tailbacks in the country and once he gets momentum it's really hard to stop him. He is also very disciplined at securing the ball which would cut down on turnovers. I'd like to see Stinespring spread the ball out to the flats with Wilson if that option is available.

The special teams has been discussed thoroughly on here and I think it's obvious Tech has the real advantage here. Bottom line comes down to if Beamer can prepare his team the way he needs to in order win a bowl game. It seems like the past few years the main problem during bowl season has been that we werent ready for it, like it was just a vacation. Beamer has to treat it as a business trip. It'll be interesting to see how Kiffin gets his team ready for his first bowl game as well.

All in all this game should be a great one. Smash mouth football with some big defensive plays thrown in there. If Tech gets the running game going and limits turnovers I see Tech winning by ten if not then Tennessee could run away with it.

Yeah, Suh can really only change the game by eating your quarterback. So one-dimensional...

I think you missed the point, Suh is a DT, you know where he is going to line up on every play. Berry is a safety that lines up all over the field, he hits like a linebacker and covers space like a safety.

I think he was just trying to point out that Berry is a versatile player who plays all over the field in run support, as a pass defender and as a pass rusher. Lose track of where he is and he can eat your lunch.

Haha

There is no ctrl button on Suh's computer, Ndamukong Suh is always in control

He is a very rare combination of size, strength and motor. I would agree that based on performance this year alone he is probably the best player in college football.

You must keep in mind who we've been playing the last few games (maryland, ncstate, uva) some of the worst teams in the ACC. Not exactly a good measure of Tyrod's ability.

hey hartwood, I put a message on your page about stafford. click on your username, should take you there...

the special teams aspect of this game scares the crap out of me. our kick/punt coverage has been better, but it's still much worse than it should be...General Neyland would be very disappointed!! Williams/Taylor combo is about the only other thing that worries me about VT, with our LBs so banged on an already mediocre (to our standards) group.

Should be a great game though. It's sort of a civil war for my family, most of my dad's side went to VT and most of my mom's side went to UT.
