I know for a fact that many of my close friends from the rural outskirts of Chattanooga would not vote for a black man. And every single one of them are Republican. I also know quite a few from my time at Tennessee. There's idiots on both sides of the table. Many African Americans only voted Obama because he was black. The results of losing those votes in Tennessee would be negligible in the big picture.

EDIT: Just reread your post. You are right, it does happen everywhere. I'm just speaking from where I believe it's most prevelant.

Want to bet? JC Watts won his redneck OK district with about 90%. Rednecks in SC elected a black rep this past cycle.

FWIW, most of the truly ignorant "rednecks in the rural south" I know... and I probably know many more than you do... pull a straight Dem ticket without caring one bit about who is on it. Daddy voted D. Grandaddy voted D. In fact like the Hatfields and McCoys, no one remembers why. It is just what "we" do.

My first experience voting sheds some light. It was a 90% Dem county... had been since the Civil War. The guy who taught me to use the machine said: "Flip this lever down (straight Dem) then pull this handle". He was very disappointed that I figured the machine out myself and split my ticket.

No. The "right" engages in politics.... they just don't have 90% of the so called "main stream media" helping them. I think the imbalance in the media is one of the biggest reasons we can't have honest conversations about important issues.

The exact same thing could be said of the GOP. And while I can't know how many rednecks you are familiar with, I'm related to quite a few and know many more who would never vote for a black canidate no matter how qualified he or she was. I don't agree with it but it is a reality. And also not limited to the South.

Wasn't even close in Tennessee, and that's where I'm speaking from. And also, this isn't the highly populated areas. So maybe I shouldn't have stressed the droves, because the impact might be negligible. But I would like to see an African American win the GOP primary just so I can hear them backtrack into "both parties are stupid" to avoid the obvious racism. And no, I'm not saying GOPers are racist, just a lot of the people I know in rural Tennessee.

edit: And the Southern Democrat hasn't existed since the 70s. Something to with "State's rights."

My original point, if you can read, was that there will always be a large segment of people in this part of the country that will never vote for a black canidate regardless of qualifications or party affiliation. I am not one of them.
