Attempted robbery victim: UT players should stay on team
Posted: Nov 12, 2009 2:23 PM CST Updated: Nov 12, 2009 3:15 PM CST

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- One of the men police said was a victim of an attempted armed robbery by three UT football players told 6 News Thursday he thinks they should stay on the team.
Corey B. Zickefoose, 20, said he was sitting in the driver's seat of a 1998 Hyundai Elantra on Cumberland Ave. when one of the players pulled a gun and demanded money.
But that's not enough to prevent the players from being kicked off the team, he told 6 News.
"I think they should still be able to play football, regardless," he said. "Tennessee is my place. It's my football team."
"Even after they put a gun in your face, you say let them play football?" 6 News asked.
"Yeah, it's Tennessee. That's the way it is sometimes," Zickefoose said.
The three freshmen football players, defensive back Janzen Jackson, 19, wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson, 19, and defensive back Michael Edwards, 18, were arrested early Thursday on three charges of attempted armed robbery.
Marie Montmarquet, 21, was also charged with attempted armed robbery, as well as some drug-related offenses.
Police say the players attempted to rob at gunpoint Zickefoose and two friends, Benjamin J. Everett, 20, and Corey M. Smith, 18, of Maryville. The three victims are not UT students.
"The guy jumps out of the passenger seat, runs up and just swings open my door like this and stuck a gun in my face like that," Zickefoose said.
"You weren't scared at all?" 6 News asked.
"No," Zickefoose said.
"A guy is pointing a gun in your face and you aren't scared?" 6 News asked.
"No, I knew I didn't have any money or nothing. I just know how it is. a lot of people do stupid stuff," Zickefoose said.
"Did you know the guys? Did you know they were football players?" 6 News asked.
"Nope. I had no idea," Zickefoose said, adding that he had never seen them before.
Zickefoose believes he may have been targeted because of the stereo system in his car.
He said the incident wasn't part of a drug deal and claims he and his friends were only at the gas station to buy cigarettes.

Dang. Slive must have hired this "victim", and paid off our freshman to commit the act. This just all seems way too unintelligent on everyone's part to not be staged.

drug deal gone bad is what i'm hearing and it makes sense. Nuke and mike edwards were meeting them there to buy weed and they decided to rob him instead. The guy didn't have any money but he was there to buy cigs??? And even after "random" guys put a gun in his face he wasn't scared and he wants them to be reinstated??? Doesn't add up. I think he wants them back on the team b/c if they're not, Nuke and Edwards won't have anything better to do than to hunt him down and he knows it. The whole situation stinks of lies

Thanks everyone for your input on this. Glad I am not the only one who thinks this is strange.

Where are you hearing this was a drug deal gone bad? the national enquirer? why would they be trying to buy more weed when the girl in the car already had plenty?

If the rest of your fact pattern is correct, I think it's more likely that the victim doesn't want this investigated - which would lead to trouble for him.

I mean I can understand the 3 people saying that. Their names are all over the papers and if/when UT loses a star player because of the incident the 3 of them will be the most hated people on campus. Right or wrong it's how college students work. I think that the guy is trying to save his own ass

Also about the drug deal gone bad. If true, a large quantity of drugs would have been found on either party...I'm not buying it

If the guys in the Hyundai are drug dealers, that doesn't mean they are stupid enough to carry all of their product down to Pilot to make a sale. Just sayin'.

I don't think it was a drug deal,I mean, did you get a good look at the victims? They didn't look like they would be able to handle french fry duty at McDonalds.

Actually what is "not" said is so important here. Obviously these "adults" did this. Now is the witness just a stone hard kid from the streets of Knoxville ? Is the witness an actual accompliss (drug deal). And the other assesment was that the "munchies" over took them ! All of these are laughable to me !!!!! Here's what Im worried about, Jackson is released(prolly fair with the info we have), now Mike has lawyered up, and Nu'Keese is left alone, Looks and Sounds to the World outside Knoxville that "the Pahokee kid" will take the fall......... I have no favor. I say KICK THEM ALL OUT for ruining a good thing.
But ! If JJ wasn't a part of this he shouldn't be penalized for his actions one bit ! I know how it will look with the "5* starter " being let free, but it is what it will be ....

Yeah these guys were pretty cool though! Pretty laid back for getting a real looking gun put up in your face.

But I agree. McDonalds would be a challenge

bizarre. this makes me think that there really is more to this story now

....either that or the guy is an idiot

No charges on Jackson, that tells me he had NOTHING to do with it. The police would not just let him go without bond if they had any reason to believe that he was directly involved. Attempted armed robbery is a Felony, you do not get a warning for that. I think he should have been at Gibbs Hall instead of on the Strip though.

But there is definitely some very fishy about this story. Something does not add up, which is why I think Kiffin is doing the right thing by getting all the facts before he makes a decision.

Maybe the kid is a hardcore fan and loves UT and thinks that if he doesn't make a big deal out of it, maybe they'll get to stay and play. I know if he put a gun in my face, I'd be waiting everyday after practice to kick his teeth in haha and I would have been pretty damn scared to have a gun put in my face. What an idiot kid.
