VFL34 I remember...

I'll never forget Linda Cohn calling the highlights after the game on sports center.

"He's so little.......he's so good.......he's the best running back in college football"

For the record I never thought 34 was that little.

And he was #33. Played baseball against him growing up and football with him at Morristown West. By the 11th grade he was anything but "little!"

I was living in Jacksonville, FL when the Jags drafted James. Had he gone to any other team, I think he would have had a much better NFL career. He was treated like sh** in Jacksonville. Jags fans booed him every time he stepped foot on the field, just because he went to UT.

Was pretty pathetic.

I just remember being smaller than him so little man was wierd but its like calling the big boss little Benny when he is 6-3 355 :)

watched that game today, again.

19 carries 226 yards. Had touchdown carries of 6 yards and 35 yards. Also had a breakaway 68 yard carry to help put the game away.

VFL34 would not be denied on that day or his whole career at Tennessee. He waited behind other backs in front of him for four years and when he got his chance he made us all remember him. He even took a redshirt year to get to play. True VFL. I am sure a couple in Florida remember him, too. GOAT!

Thanks Travis

Wouldn't you love to see some former players roaming the sidelines during the game ?! I don't want to seem like we're pulling out all the stops just for them, but it would we electric to see Al Wilson, Inky Johnson,Peyton Manning, Travis Stephens, Peerless Price, Jason Whitten etc. bringing their presence to the sideline and the locker room during the game !! Neyland would come off of its foundation !! 102k rocking from beginning to end ?! WE GOT THIS GUYS !!! #WGWTFA 👊👊

I played against little man my entire middle school and high school career in basketball and football. His mom babysat me a few times and I know his brother Scottie well also.

My biggest sports accomplishment was a wide receiver screen I took 65 yards for a TD and little man didn't run me down. He was on a safety blitz and almost sacked the quarterback then almost ran me down at the goal line.

If you ever are on here James, remember Dorton sometimes!

I remember that game like it was yesterday. I was living in Charleston at the time and it was a late decision to go to the game. Went down Friday morning and played golf somewhere near Laurel Island, then stayed in Jax near Sawgrass.

Woke up about 4AM on Sat morning, went to the lobby and grabbed the newspaper (this was before these gadgets we have today). I recall not being too up or down going into this game.

When the game started, we played well....except for J. Witten. He struggled in the 1st half with a couple of fumbles, IIRC. But as the game went on, UT never folded. They kept bringing the heat...especially #34!!!!

Travis Stephens and Vols run over the Gators

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5CiAJ3MaAU

Watch that isolation at the 34:00 minute mark of the video...perfect execution a weakside power gap play with fullback lead up into the hole....

And then imagine what type of CARNAGE Hurd could do running that play against a 4-2-5 defense....

You can also see how deep Stephens is in the backfield and the steps both he and Bartholomew take to create the counter action....I've posted before how I think out timing is off on our counter gap play now because Hurd busts it up in there just a little too soon....this play shows what can happen when the timing and blocking is right!

That is one of the most beautiful plays in all of football at ANY LEVEL....and it never gets old or out of date...

GO VOLS!

Witten's fumble at the 44:38 mark just shows you that even an all-SEC, all-pro TE can't overcome bad fundamentals by keeping the ball in the wrong arm when he's running with the ball....ARgggggggghhhhhhh

Man--Witten had a terrible 1st half....and I know we won that game...but one thing is always glaring when we line up against Fla--their DBs are just head and shoulders better than ours!!!

Perfect call, MikeVol. With correct timing on blocking and Hurd blasting up the middle, this could be devastating to ANY defense, especially, the quick- reacting Gators. MikeVol to Butch, MikeVol to Butch.... Is this thing on???

LOLOLOL....

I've been screaming it since last year...to develop that play with Dobbs under center and then run that power game package with some play-action passes and bootlegs.....thought they listened when they lined up in the off-set I in the bowl game....

I hope they break it out this Saturday--But Hey---what do I know!!! I'm just an arrogant know it all trying to prove my manhood according to some...

GO VOLS!

TS gave me one of my best moments as a Vol fan. In 2001, I was invited to watch the UGA game with some people from church... in Dallas, GA. I was the only Vol fan there. They turned the TV volume down and had Munson blaring on the radio. I kept quiet the whole time until TS took that screen pass to the house then I unloaded.....

Of course, you know that my worst moment as a Vol fan followed shortly after....

same thing happened to me in Neyland...went to the game with a couple of good friends from church who were UGA fans....was sitting on 1st row in upper deck of north end zone and about jumped out of my skin when TS went screaming down the sideline...loudest I've ever personally heard Neyland....

then....the doldrums hit.....and it all started with that STUPID kickoff....

One time some guy ran for... oh 200 yards or so against some SEC team about this time of year(my bad December) a few years back. You remember that? Can't quite remember the name of the other team though. Seems like I remember too that they said something really complimentary to you before the game also, but my memory may be a little foggy on that one too :). (Fulmer's speech that was posted on here took me back) I had wanted UT to beat Florida more than anything and I was 17. One of my favorite wins as a fan BY FAR. I am still grateful for that one. Couldn't afford a ticket to that game but I will be at the UT Florida game for the first time in my life cheering my lungs out for this W. Here is to hoping someone nuts up and has a UT GOAT game like that one that still lives in my memory from 15 years ago. Cheers.
