VFL Reality Check -- It goes both ways

We (fans and supporters) want the players to be loyal to the team and the University. We get upset when a player introduces himself as being from X high school on Monday Night Football instead of from UT. On the other hand, we crow about someone introducing himself as having gone to THE Real UT. We want players to be loyal, be dedicated, stay 4 years, not transfer, etc.

However, many tend to criticize players personally when they don't feel their play is up to par. Listen, I do not think that Matt Simms is an SEC level QB. That is apparent. But...when I see things like "he's a bum", "he's horrible", "worse than his brother", etc., it just makes me cringe.

Are we a big orange family or not? Do we want players to remember their time her fondly, win or lose? Criticize their play? Sure. Make personal remarks or attacks? No way.

VFL goes both ways.

By the way, I fully support the decision to start Worley as I don't think we can win with Simms. But, I appreciate Matt's loyalty to this program and his dedication. He gave his all for Tennessee Saturday. It wasn't much, but he gave all he had. He's a Vol, and I support him.

even when interview after the game, he showed class despite being a senior benched for a freshman. simms impresses me except when he throws the ball

I'm pretty sure most of the posts on Simms since Saturday night have said he is a hard worker and a good guy, but that he's not getting it done. And let's face it...he is horrible - it's just the truth

A few threads on a message board is pretty narrow scope of an entire fanbase.

I was right there with you at the beginning of this post. You were nailing it.........then....."He gave his all for Tennessee Saturday, it wasn't much, but all he gave all he had.

I agree 1,000%... I tend to believe that circumstance has been a little rough on Matt Simms, look at the teams he has come up against. Yes he has some flaws, and they are very noticable at his position, but this guy is ALL VOL... yes VFL , and he is tuff as rawhide. I for one am glad to have him on this team

Time to stop bashing him... Go J Worley and the Vols

Good post. Seems like some on here think Simms plays badly intentionally. Leadership is often times taken for granted in a football player, and Matt has given us that when we needed it. He's not a Heisman candidate, but I'm certainly glad he's a VFL.

Question...how is one a VFL but introduced as a former Vol? Once a Vol....

You said the same thing about Simms that everyone else had said. You just said it in a nicer way. It's like saying poo instead of ****. I like Simms. He gives his all for Tennessee but no matter how you spin it, he's looks like poo playing qb.

Simms may love UT, but the kid is terrible on the field and that is all that matters to everyone. Results win over the fans and brings them to the party, being nice and respectful is a party favor.

Agree 100 %. Simms has a huge hart and knew his jobs over the past 2 seasons was to go out there and take a beating against some of the best teams in the country so the younger more talanted qb's didn't turn into headcases. He lived the I will give my all for TN motto. Still wasn't easy or run to watch him play.
