Sad to learn today of the passing of an old VFL friend, Mickey Marvin. We attended the same church while students at UT. Ever ready with a smile, Mickey was a true friend, a joy to know and a good and true Christian. Mickey had fought ALS before God called him home. He was 61.
Please remember Mickey and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

I was an athlete and lived at Gibbs Hall when Marvin played at UT. One night, after several of us had been out drinking beer, I got into a major argument with one of my teammates. The dispute escalated, and we decided to go outside and fight. We went outside the side door of the dorm. It must have been 2:00 a.m. or so, and it was raining. There is more shouting, the two of are nose to nose and about to start punching, and suddenly the side door bursts open, and out comes the very big, the very muscular, and the very irritated Mickey Marvin. He is pissed because we've awakened him with all the noise. He grabbed both of us by the scruff of the neck, essentially, and walked us back inside Gibbs, told us that if he heard any more screaming we'd be fighting him instead of each other, and, needless to say, that was the end of the argument. All was quiet after Marvin's intervention. He was a good guy and an outstanding college and pro player--had an excellent NFL career. RIP to a great Vol.

Damn. Same age as me. I remember him well. Horrible disease. I work with a guy who was just diagnosed with it.

Godspeed Mr Marvin.

There may be, but I have never seen it. But somewhere in the Stadium (maybe near The General statue) there should be a plaque to honor all past vols for life.... I know there are many and will be many more who should be remembered for all they have done and are doing for our team and our school and for us fans. Doesn't seem to be too much to expect for them.

So sad to hear this. I knew Mickey in school, he was the most menacing cat and one of the most tenacious blockers I've ever seen. A great Raider, he should have been cast in Ben Davidson's role in Conan.

Loved watching him play. Battle tried to make him play under weight which hindered his college career but he was able to become all-pro with the raiders with proper coaching and training.

RIP
