What VFL means to me. I know, cool story Bro, etc.
From far away...I went to UT in 1988, baseball scholarship. I think the football team started 0-5 or 0-6. But these guys living in Gibbs said they had a great recruiting class. They were Shazzon Bradley, Chuck Webb, Carl Pickens and others. After a year I realized I wasn't an SEC worthy player, so transferred to a community college in Arizona. There, I kept hearing about an amazing running back that lived downstairs from me. Eventually, on my work study program I had to work the sticks at a Scottsdale CC football game. The Kid ran for 436 yards an 7 TD's that night.
Later, that player and I would hang out at my place, playing cards and having a few. I yelled UT at him every chance I could. A year later, once I was back home in MN I heard he was going to play at UT. Mr. Charlie Garner was a stud.
Been through the great times of the 90's, the fun recruiting battles of the 00's, and the despair of the 10's.... I've pledged my $$ but seen little results. Painful for all of us, yet kept hoping. Its a great University that runs through my veins, even from 1,000 miles away. You can tell that by my 'lurker' 13 year reign.
Finally, I am convinced we are on the right track. I love recruiting, but I'm learning that coaching matters more. And this coach is winner, plain and simple. I am so excited for what is to come.
Win or lose, its so great to be a Tennessee Vol
