VFL Cool Story bro

I was buying some furniture today and saw a tall older gentleman wearing a Josh Dobbs golf tournament polo shirt. Being a big Dobbs fan I went and talked to him, and he told me about Dobbs’ invitational tourney for lettermen that raises money for UT engineering scholarships. As I’m talking to him his wife comes up to me and tells me “my husband is too humble to tell you, but he was the highest drafted wide receiver in Tennessee history, drafted 11th overall in the first round”. I was talking to Anthony Hancock, class of 82. Absolute gentleman, soft spoken and a pleasure to talk to. I thought he deserved a shout out here. And his wife was right, he deserves recognition.

One of my favorite all-time Vols…blazing fast.

I confess to getting a little help from Google, but I am glad that I did because the receivers from the time period of the 80s +/- brought back some great memories:
Larry Seivers (late 70s)
Stanley Morgan, Anthony Hancock, Willie Gault
Joey Clinkscales, Anthony Morgan, Alvin Harper
Anthony Miller, Tim McGhee
Carl Pickens (early 90s)

Amazing that we were blessed with so many NFL caliber receivers.
Quite a list. And, at least to me, I think this helps me hold out hope for a good qb/wr situation this year. We had fantastic wr talent but very few of these guys, if any had “all world” QBs. They had guys who could operate the system and get to ball to them in an efficient manner…but all QBs had that competitive moxy. If we can get that from our QB this year, I think we have talent at wr/te to give us a better qb/wr tandem results than LY.

He was an elite corner. Over the last 6o years, struggling to think of one better for the Vols. Roland was a shutdown CB before that term was even used.
All-American, highly intelligent, tough as nails (played with a broken nose his sophomore year and broken thumb as a junior), great punt returner, first-round draft pick, played 11 years for New England in the NFL.

Over a decade ago I worked for a non profit, both Anthony Hancock and his wife were members of the Board. They were tremendous educators in the Knoxville public schools. Glad to hear they are still doing well.

Saw @peaygolf posted this in another thread and it reminded me of your post.

Outstanding! Cool story bro...

If you go furniture shopping in Antioch, Rod Wilks will deliver the sofa to your house.

Little known fact...

Before the boogie man goes to sleep, he checks under his bed for Rod Wilks.
With one hand...one his tippie toes while cross stepping.

Seriously though, is there not something that can be done for the poor boy. Vol legend. Thor is scared of him. Relegated to Antioch delivering furniture. Apparently his legend did come from the classroom.

Like Gault, alot of those 80's receivers ran track including Hankcock. Hancock helped recruit McGee to UT from his HS.
