Our game plan was very vanilla against Montana. The offensive staff was trying to work on some of the weaker areas of the offense and not showing anything. UT fans will see much of the same versus Cincinnati.

This staff is much more intelligent than former staffs. Why show your offense to Muschamp before playing UF??? That is the the real first game of the year. UT may show a little more versus Cincy. But, it will have a lot more creativity and different plays versus UF.

Most everyone on this board is freaking out, calling Poole terrible, and calling the OL terrible. Will UT be the top rushing team in the SEC, probably not. But, to already be calling for Poole to be replaced by freshmen and saying UT will be last in the SEC in rushing is ridiculous. When Chaney opens up the offense completely and the OL gels. The run game will improve a lot.

Anyone care to make a ban bet that UT is at minimum in the top half of the SEC teams in rushing this year? Before you jump on the ban bet and get banned, please remember, Dooley and Chaney went on record saying the run game would be better this year. They wouldn't say as much if they weren't sure it wouldn't happen! Doole is very critical of performance and don't hype up the team without justification like Fulmer and Kiffin did!!!

This... We got ahead and then got some tape for the lineman to study.. We maybe showed a fourth of our play book.. We could have won by 50 if we just wanted to run up the score

I agree about being vanilla, but Poole missed a lot of gaps. That's all I kept saying it seemed when he ran. I hope he looks at the film and learns from it, because I do like Poole as a person.

chaney better open up the offense this week, or u t will get their heads handed to them by the bearcats. they can and will score in a hurry, and have all 11 starters back on defense. i know the line is young, but they better grow up in practise this week, or-----

FWIW, Bama's QB's threw for 4 INT's and Trent Richardson ran 13 times for 37 yards. Against Kent State.

Point is, first games are not necessarily indicative of how good a team will be. Anybody here think Bama is as bad as those stats make them appear? Sure, I'm concerned about the running game, but a lot remains to be seen. Primarily, how do we improve with time and just how good were the Grizzlies up front? Only time will tell.

agreed, and me too - I wish Poole the best and hope for a 1,000 yrds, but i thought he seemed tentative just like last year; IMO, after Lane came in and hit a few gaps full speed Tauren picked it up a notch. Maybe with Lane pushing him for playing time he'll step it up more?

I agree the coaches were probably holding back a lot as far as play calling goes. Execution by the players will improve as they get used to game speed and mistakes will be minimized when we play teams whose offensive line actually moves off the line every play and when the weather is more favorable. We had two 100 yard recievers and Poole and Lane combined for almost 140 yards and 2tds. Not to shabby imo with little help from the o-line. I think we will see improvement though i thought it was a good game anyways.

Vanilla or not, you'd still expect Montana to be picking themselves up after being pancaked repeatedly. The fact that didn't happen raises my eyebrows. You can be vanilla and play with some nastiness, i didn't see that going on last night.

Whether that's true or not, if we play like that against Cincinnati we lose. IMO, JMHO, IMHO, TIFWIW.

Montana has size and experience on their lInes, they are probably a little better than we give them credit for. That being said I did expect us to run a bit more effectively last night. I think we will do better this week.

Good post, can't draw too many conclusions from last night. If we don't have success rushing this week I'll start being more concerned. I think we'll do better this week.

I hear your point, then i think about the rest of the teams on our schedule. I still don't feel any better about it. It's about the attitude and Olines should play with a bad one and bad intentions.

The O-line is still making dumb mistakes on pass protection, which keeps Chaney from opening it up fully. Even with that they were not going to open it fully against Montana anyway. Poole has poor vision in the running lanes and dances too much. I agree they did not show it all last night and the O-line has not started running traps, counters, etc. That will do wonders for the running game production. When teams put 8 in the box and everyone within 10 yards of the line; a kick-out block on a trap or counter will enable the RB to take it to the house.

How does everyone KNOW what the coaches gameplan was? He did not share that on anything I read or on the DD show. Am I missing something?

Utah state totally dominated the line of scrimmage vs auburn..just because we are UT dsnt mean that we won't have trouble against even smaller schools that have older, more experienced linemen. Just give our youth some time guys..they held their own last year in the sec, they will be better this year.

FIRST GAME!!! We are upset about an "ugly" win of only 26 pts. Fans of TCU and Notre Dame sure wish they upset about and ugly win.

It was a good win with a lot of positives. Winning never gets old.

But anyone watching knows the scoreline flattered us. Yes, it was vanilla, but those big plays don't go for big plays against the majority of our schedule.

The coaches will not sleep well this week.

It is what it is, and I love these Vols. Seven wins will be really solid; eight wins will be a great season for this team. Here's hoping they didn't use all their breaks against Montana.

GBO!

I like what you had to say. Practice speed and game speed are totally two different things. Once the OL and RB get game reps, they will be ok. You can only do so much at practices in simulating game situations. We must all have patients and pray for the best.

It is concerning, especially because we outweighed them by an average of about 50 lbs a person. The sky isn't falling, but there is also no evidence yet that this line is better at run blocking than last year.
