Very disturbing...what kiffin didnt say

1st off... i like what i have see from kiffin.. so far. i support him and this team 100%. i do not expect to win championships every year. However, i do expect to be COMPETING for them and be in the position to have a chance to go to atlanta every year. From what we know, this is shaping up to be the best football staff in AMERICA. I dont think hamilton signs off on all these big time names without expecting the sec crown within 2 years. m. kiffin only has a couple years, orgeron is a hired gun( who i think is more trouble than hes worth.) Thiss is a staff that is not gonna be able to handle losing. You dont bring in one of the highest paid coaching staffs to be mediocre. I wish CLK the best and im always a vol but i wanted to see him say that this is tennessee and we expect to be in the mix every year. thats not biting off more than he can chew, its just setting the tone for his tenure.[/QUOTE]

i think that's right, particularly if you buy into the hype about him being an offensive genius. if he's that good, he should have no problem being that confident. shoot for the stars, you know?

people went on and on this season about how we have the talent, the facilities, basically everything except the coaching necessary to win. so now that we allegedly have good coaching, there should be nothing keeping us from competing for the SEC title next year. even worn-out fulmer (with a little help from the football gods) managed to get us to the SEC title game last year. if this guy is half as good as he's supposed to be, there should be no problem making the statement now that we intend to compete for it again.

thank you. i agree 100%. I think the hiring of this staff shows that Tennessee is committed. it just would have been nice for the head coach at tennessee to say that he expects to be in it every year. And what if he did say he was gonna win a championship and then he did. he would be free of the fulmer monkey on his back and would own knoxville. i wish him the best but he appeared to shy away from the pressure.

tempered expectations for one season does not mean you change your expectations for the program in general.

i don't understand why that's so hard to understand.

there may be as many as 4 teams in the SEC that will be better than us next year, for a myriad of valid football reasons other than coaching.

i can't realistically put the floor for next season at 9+ wins, and claim anything less than that is a failure for the season. That's irrational all things considered.

getting to the post season next season would be a very good step forward, as to the directon of the program.

Believe it or not, he did leave the Raiders better than he found them. If he were allowed to finish out the season, their record would be a lot better than it is right now.

Additionally: I also have 2 degrees and I'm not using either right now. I am, instead, killing bad guys and I am damn good at that! Does that qualify me to post here?

y, yes...yes it does sir

welcome to VN ...and most of all, THANKS for your service

would it really have mattered?

not one bit - except this thread title would be different; perhaps

Very Disturbing...what Kiffin didn't wear at the press conference.

(I think we all noticed that he didn't wear an orange hat)

or

Very Disturbing...Kiffin steals Warren's #.

(The LK jersey they held up at the beginning was #1 - looks like Warren is screwed - what a selfish coach)

I actually like the fact that he didnt come out saying that. He came across as a pro and not some rah rah guy just looking to make people happy in a presser.

i am sad to see so many vols have their expectations so low. i see talent on this team. i see the sec being down again. i see a team next year led by juniors that can be on par with any in our conference. i also see a coach who looks a lil tentative. you have to expect to win and you have to believe you belong. I did not see that yesterday. i watched the whole conference and i never heard him directly say that he fully expects to be winning. when directly asked about his expectations, he shuffled and kind of moved around the question. All im saying is whats wrong with the head coach at Tennessee publicly stating the he expects to win? THATS WHAT HE SHOULD BE SAYING

Open your eyes

I think the vast majority on this board suffer from low expectations. Kiffin apparently does too. That makes him a perfect fit.

I'm shocked that you and I generally agree. Maybe the lack of Haiku form helped.

As far as talking goes, this is what matters:

A) What Kiffin says to recruits in their living rooms.
B) What Kiffin says to the players in the locker and film rooms and the practice and gameday fields.

As far as producing? That's what you should be concerned with... not him running his mouth. He said exactly what he needed to say without looking like a fool.

All this whining makes you look ignorant. If you dont like the way things are headed, go pull for Vandy.

a) i can't say it any clearer than it's already been said. expectations for a single year due to a set of specific circumstances (such as a HC and complete staff turnover) being tempered is not in any way changing the expectations we have for this program in general.

it's just being realistic.

b) expecting to win and believing you belong when you clearly don't is part of the reason this change was made. it's the utter refusal to acknowledge where you are as a team or as a program that leads one to make decisions that simply aren't prudent to the reality of the situation.

go back and listen to Nick Saban before last season. He spent plenty of his time trying to temper fan's expectations as well.

He did say that the precedent for championships has been established at UT and the bar was high but that is part of why he came as opposed to the other opportunities that had been offered.

i hear what you guys are saying. im not at all saying sec champs or bust for next year. i want to see improvement but i also want a coach that is expecting to win. you come out and say the sec is our goal every year and we expect to be in the mix. I just want a lil fire out of our coach. He did call out florida, if you honestly expect to beat florida, then you have to be expecting to win the east, which puts you in the sec championship game. Go VOLS!!!! COMPETE FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

You didn't watch the press conference did you? Kiffin came of very confident and did state that we will compete for championships.

do you really think he doesn't expect to win or compete for championships?

I'm with most others on here....

He said "championships" a few times in his comments....

Sure he is planning on winning championships....

not whining. just cant understand why the head coach at one of the most prestigous schools in the country is scared to say that he expects to win. Whats so wrong with that?

do you really think he doesn't expect to win or compete for championships?

no i doubt, but has there ever been a more opportune time to state that publicly. why call out florida, but not the rest of the sec. the whole country was watching, SET THE TONE

That is a mind set he will instill in the players and staff...not the press
