That first game against GT has me a bit concerned but then I realized that Coach Warren practiced against that type offense for 4 years at Air Force. With the high praise about how DB improvement I am beginning to feel a bit better. He will be an invaluable asset when game planning begins.

Man I hope so . . . our DB's were out of position last year and refused to look for the ball! With Warren and Hoke coaching D along with Shoop, we should have a pretty darn good unit, loosing Sutton and Barnett left some big shoes to fill but I think with a healthy interior and better DB play we should be fine.

Fall camp can't get here soon enough!!!

GT will challenge our discipline and fundamentals right out of the gate. We probably won't get to see a whole lot pass coverage wise, but hopefully enough to see some improvement in that area and tackling...

We are probably going to over-react to whatever we see defensively in the first game. We are facing a great tactician in Paul Johnson with all summer to prepare a game plan and a lot of talent returning from a very good team. They are going to put up a lot of yards on us. We need to limit them to field goals.

I will be more worried if our offense is stagnant, especially if OL play is still subpar. We need to see great blocking and protection from our front 5 and tight ends. If that doesn't happen, nothing our defense does this year will get us to Atlanta.

And also having to prepare for GT while at UNC. I agree, his experience against tech and that offense will and likely already has proven invaluable

I think we beat them by 2-3 TD's but I can't wait for that game. Will be a bad*ss time down in ATL

Have Shoop or Hoke regularly schemed against the flexbone during their time in the B1G or Pac-12? Can't think of any OOC games they'd deal with like that.

They're breaking in a new starter at QB also, and the favorite is currently out for Spring. If we end up smoking em, this is the headstart on poormouthing the win. :)

New QB jinx also is a good head start on excusing a loss. :lolabove:

I think we win, but it won't be pretty.

It will definitely be assignment football for the GT game. Blown assignments will show with big yardage gains.

Great point, OP, hope you are right!

GA Tech averaged 12 passes per game last year, 6 completions per game and their passing game averaged them 5.4 yards per attempt. So, for every completed pass they only gained 10 yards...

I hope our DB's will be ready to play close to the line of scrimmage and make some plays. I almost wonder what the chances of ditching the Nickelback in favor of an additional OLB are for this game. 4-2-5 is good against the spread, but I worry about how it will hold up against the flexbone.

Tech football site lists the offensive scheme as the spread option. Guess flexbone is another term for it.

That was the mythical BACKUP QB curse and that was somewhat swatted down last season. Point is, their offense isn't plug and go. Their new QB very possibly won't be a maestro first game in and VN Law would be in full effect mehing a significant win margin. Just like the last three bowl wins. :wink2:

I would suspect we will see Shoop's Star defense for the GT game, which is a 4-3-4 with the Star OLB. Sapp was pegged as the Star OLB last season before his injury.

Unfortunately our DBs have refused to TURN AROUND for the most part of the last 25 years! Hope that changes. Hard to defend against something when you don't know where it is!!!

Coach Warren has brought the most excitement from an assistant around here since Sal stepped foot on campus.

Let's pray coach Warren can and will make a difference in the Vols secondary play, after all, the Vols certainly need to improve defensively....
giving up almost 700yds in 3 seperate games in 2016 says it all

what's the use in turning around and looking for the ball? You are already beat and running at top speed to catch up to the receiver. It's hard to run at top speed when your head is turned around at 180 degrees. It seems our backs wait till the receiver gets to them, then they turn and start to chase. Too late....

I get you're sentiment.
Reality is though our opponents 50/50 balls were more like 80/20 or 70/30 in their favor sometimes when our DB's were in position and simply didn't locate the ball.

Memphis, if you look back at some of our one on one drills in camp nearly all our DBs were tugging, clawing and reaching on those corner balls, and I commented on how much our DBs were holding. That went on all year and they would never look back , instead trying to time slapping the arm or blocking their sight of the ball. Something has to change this year. Maybe with the coaching change a new philosophy will be in place..:good!:
