Wouldn't surprise me to see this one to the good guys. Just as much UT up in BSG as VT. Depends on numbers at TE/WR this year. Hopefully coaches push for him. I think he's a candidate to shut it down if someone really pushes hard. I know he said he was taking his time, but education and being a priority will be a big play.
Anybody know a projected major?
Wells has some serious in-roads and connections with many of the best players in the state. His brother Bobby coaches defensive lineman D'Andre Litaker at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro. His good friend, Brothers, coaches defensive lineman Brant Lawless at Nashville Christian. And one of his former players, Travis Turner, coaches Vol tight end target James Mitchell in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
"I know all that coach Wells brings," Turner said. "Having played for him I know he's very passionate about football. When I played for him at Eastern Kentucky, we were one of the toughest teams in the country and that started up front."
"I can see coach Wells and James (Mitchell) hitting it off quick. Get the chance to get him down on campus and get him introduced to coach Wells. Sitting them down one one one and having that connection."
"I'll be down there next weekend," Mitchell said. "I hope to learn a lot about it and get a feel for it. They play good football in the SEC. They have a rich history and tradition. They even have a great tight end from around here in Jason Witten."
Tennessee, Clemson, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Duke, Miami, Louisville and others are after Mitchell. The Blue Devils, Vols, Hokies, and Tigers are recruiting him the hardest and a trip to Tennessee for Junior day is a chance to learn. "Just learn more about it," Mitchell said. "Pick up everything I can from it. Meet the coaches and players. Just see all that Tennessee has to offer. Learn more about the academic side to see if I can fit in there one day."
His high school coach, Travis Turner, played for current Tennessee offensive line coach Walt Wells at Eastern Kentucky. There is the tie that Tennessee needs to get in the race and let the relationship building take over. "He has told me that he is a great guy and he really enjoyed playing for him," Mitchell said. "He has told me that he thinks I'll like him a lot. I spoke with him last night. I hope to talk to him even more next weekend."
"I want to go somewhere that I'm going to get a good education," Mitchell said. "I want to be surrounded by good people like good coaches and teammates. Just a place that puts me in a position to be successful."
We've got to go after Mitchell hard. I seen this kid play 3 times. All 3 times against Gate City in Virginia. He's really a WR instead of a TE. He has that type of skills. He can go up & get high throws & has speed enough to run right by a DB. I believe he could develop into a big time WR. Yes, WR & not TE. We might start him out at TE but I think CBJ will quickly see he's really a WR in a TE's type body.

I for one am glad this has finally been cleared up. It's nice to see when VN can come together and democratically decide that a TE is in fact a TE.
Bravo VN. Bravo.

You know.... if we lined up in an I formation and he could build up a head of steam, I wonder if he could be an Eddie George size running back. That would be pretty cool to have. He might be to big for TE after all.
