Yes, it was a dirty timing move. Most of college sports is that way now. Players aren’t coming for the love of the school. It’s what school pays the most, what school can do the most for me, and/or what school can put me in The League the fastest. NCAA football is more the minor league of the NFL, than it is kids going to get an education.
I mean for the players that aren’t going to make it to the NFL this is a great opportunity. Not only can they get a top notch education, but they can also make life changing money. So i can’t blame them for trying to get as much as possible. I’d do the exact same. Especially when an injury can end everything at any time.

That says it all. College football has turned into the minor leagues. They need to set a salary cap for each school and just go from there.

There’s a very good chance Michigan just gives the job to the interim HC, Biff Poggi and waits until next year to hire a better option. Dillingham signed an extension at Arizona St and DeBoer isn’t leaving Bama. Jedd Fisch or Jeff Brohm are really the only coaches left that I think may be willing to take it and fans may be ok with. Them or someone currently in the NFL. High-profile coaches are supposedly very leery of taking the job because of the entire situation surrounding the athletic department.

Btw Brohm and Fisch would be desperation hires. The fans really don’t want either one and feel like both would just be the program settling. But it sounds like everyone Michigan does want has told them no.

If Michigan were smart it would study how we handled the transition when Kiffin left and do just the opposite. The difference is a 1 year versus 4-5 year set back. Biff = Kippy in this situation I believe.

A little silly to think Brohm and Fisch would be desperation hires.

Fanbases are stupid. They all want the same 4-5 coaches and no one else. And 3-4 of them are always unobtainable. But if you don’t get one of them then the fanbase doesn’t like it.

I feel the timing of the Sherrone Moore firing was very dirty. The administration waited until after signing day to get the HS recruits to sign on the dotted line. Then they fire Moore a week later knowing that the recruits can not enter the transfer portal until 5 days after a new coach is hired.

Now here we are, almost a week later with no new coach announced. The recruits are hamstrung and unable to do anything. Yet Michigan is getting all this extra time to cozy up to the recruits and manipulate them into staying after also deceiving them.

They can enter the portal now. They don’t have to wait for the hire

Instead of recycling the same names and dealing with the same agent, I'd find me a guy from the lower levels that can and has coached his butt off there. Maybe it's not P4 but if you can recognize a player when you see one, assemble a quality staff and win there, I like my odds with a guy like that moving up.

The post I responded to was asking about the time players get specifically after a coach leaves. Not the normal window.

Understood. The other poster was attempting to portray it as some kind of portal hack that would prevent their players from leaving

RULES HELP PLEASE, is there another time trigger for players to hit portal other than new coach signing?
In addition to the regular portal, I think players on teams whose head coach leaves get 30 (maybe 45) days AFTER the new coach is announced.

It's 5 days after a new coach is hired not 30 or 45
Sort of….,, finally googled it…, As follows

The NCAA's new transfer portal rules significantly changed coaching change exceptions,
shortening the window for players to enter the portal from 30 days to 15 days, starting 5 days after a new head coach is announced, creating a more structured, shorter window for athletes to decide after a coaching transition, particularly for football and basketball, aiming to reduce mid-season chaos and give new coaches stability.
Key Changes for Coaching Transitions (Football/Basketball Focus)
  • New Window: Players now have a 15-day window to enter the portal.
  • Start Time: This 15-day window begins 5 days after the new head coach is officially hired or announced.
  • Purpose: This aims to slow down immediate departures, prevent mid-season roster wipes, and help new coaches assess their team before players can easily leave.
General Portal Window Changes (For Football)
  • Single Window: The December and Spring portal windows are eliminated for D1 Football.
  • New Winter Window: Replaced by a single, two-week window from January 2-16 (for 2026).

It is a portal hack. No one is allowed to leave Michigan for the transfer portal until after 5 days after their new coach is signed. Since Michigan won't sign a new coach, the additional transfer portal window won't open for their players.

Sure they will get the opportunity to leave Jan 2nd when the regular portal opens, but it gives time for the shock of being betrayed and lied to wear down. Also, other teams are prevented from contacting recruits that have signed in the early window. So Michigan is being given extra time to convince their recruiting class, whom they deceived and put in this bad situation, to stay with their program.
