Hiter locked in his Aug. 19 commitment date recently, and it still feels like his decision will come down to Michigan and Tennessee. The top-ranked, elite running back prospect out of Mineral (Va.) Louisa County High is the No. 8 recruit in the nation. He’s keeping his decision extremely quiet, so any sweeping conclusions or predictions around his recruitment are probably misplaced at this point. With that said, a final decision is approaching quickly. Michigan’s relationship with Hiter keeps the Wolverines in very strong contention here.

My pessimistic gut tells me he throws a curve ball and goes UGA or OSU. I hope I’m wrong, but just feels like one of those situations.

Anybody remember the Chris Simms recruitment from '98-'99?

He verbally committed to Tennessee on live television in December of '98, and talked about the peer recruiting he would be doing for Tennessee .... but then flipped to Texas exactly 3 weeks later.

Yes, 3 weeks is an eternity in recruiting.

The tea leaves do not read Tennessee to me… But he has continued to talk to Tennessee the last few days both he and his family so I’m not going to say it’s impossible here even though it does not look good from the outside

What I don't like about such an "update" is the use of 'tea leaves' as an all-purpose term for intuitive signals. Why not be specific about what these troubling signs are? "Tea leaves" has become an over-used cop-out term for these recruiting analysts. If they really wanted to clue us in, then they should tell the people who aren't privy to their tell-tale recruiting signs and indicators what they are talking about.

People tend to be god awful at keeping secrets. Could be him talking to a close friend, or could be one of his close family members talking to one of their close friends, etc.

The only way to keep things entirely secretive is not informing anyone of your decision, but with things like this, that's extremely rare to find.

If he's been a priority for a year, losing him would mark a big fail for Spyre and our coaching staff. All the other top backs are committed elsewhere. We'll be fine, making do with the RBs we have, probably looking for a cheap rental in the portal, but it would be nice to see what a top back could do in this offense. Until HE himself says otherwise, I'll keep hoping he's a Vol.

When you only target one guy at a position, then you fail to land him, I consider that a "big fail". Maybe you have a different definition. It's not catastrophic to the team, but it's a big fail in recruiting.

When you realize they all work for the same company, the same industry and it requires this level of subtlety to keep the game going and the money flowing from subscribers and clicks it helps to soften the blows
