'26 VA RB Savion Hiter (Michigan commit)

This is how you know who the blue blood programs in college football are. Tennessee gets busted, and despite being completely cooperative, gets relatively hammered with recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions. Michigan gets busted, and nada. FFS, they could have at least slapped them with some scholarship reductions. But true bluebloods get protected by the NCAA.
I saw Michigan fans complaining and saying we got off easy for worse offenses…

We did something that is now legal. They did something that is still illegal. People will look at it how they choose to look at it. But what real punishment was the Michigan program hit with? I didn't see any recruiting restrictions or scholarship reductions. No postseason bans. They got to keep an ill-gotten NC they cheated to win. So what REAL punishment did they get? A fine that one of their billionaire boosters will write out a check for, while laughing his ass off at how ineffective the NCAA is? Michigan cheated and got a title for it. Paying a fine is just buying that title since it wasn't taken away.

I think both programs got off pretty easily, but it’s just funny how some people always wanna play a victim and claim others receive preferential treatment

This can still be a big loss (which it is) while not being insurmountable for this team. As long as the RBs on the team produce and we land a big-time RB in next year's class, the team will be okay. But Hiter is an extremely talented player, and missing on high caliber players is always a loss. The staff doesn't single him out as the only RB to recruit this class without believing in him.

That said, he didn't pick us, so I hope evaluations are wrong and he sucks at Michigan.

Believe what you want, but we received tangible punishments to hurt our program while Michigan did not. The perception gets colored because of the coaching job Heupel did, but we were operating at a significant roster deficiency.

We were not operating at a significant roster deficiency in terms of punishment. USC after Carroll left was a significant roster deficiency. We lost a few guys who were never going to see the field or scholarship spots that would have gone to walk ons.

Go back and look at our scholarship numbers Heupel's first season. You're choosing to be ignorant if you say that wasn't a significant roster deficiency. Heupel did more with less.

Those were not as a result of punishment, it was a result of the portal.
I think you're choosing to be willfully ignorant. A lot of players were shown the portal because they were caught up in the scandal. And because of the scandal, we weren't able to replenish that roster through the portal. We were operating at a significant roster deficiency which the NCAA could have justifiably counted as enough of a scholarship reduction as to not impose more. But they did. Along with other recruiting restrictions. FFS, we're still on scholarship restrictions as long as we're on probation. The FACT is, we received actual punishment. Michigan did NOT.

I wanted Savion but there is definitely something weird about him. Didn't say a word and just grabbed the hat... had to read all the questions and decide which ones he wanted to answer. Maybe he just has high anxiety but it is a bit odd. Grats to Michigan though because all that matters is he can run the ball.

My read is the kid has some anxiety and that’s no big deal. I wish him the best. Glad he ain’t at UGA

Bring me keys

The funny thing to me is everyone said they didn’t want to ruin the kids moment. Was it really a moment? He was deciding between the 2 highest bidders not a school he was a lifetime fan. It is what it is and i wish him the best. We will be fine. I just miss the good old days when a kid went to a dream school and got paid some under the table. Go Vols!

If you’re someone who battles anxiety being an elite football recruit would be a nightmare scenario.

I saw videos of him crying with his family after the announcement. Seems like a good kid who just really hates the spotlight and the process of recruiting.

I’d much rather every recruit take his approach than the trolling and hat throwing we see from a lot of kids.

Something else just to keep in mind - if his agent truly did his job, and got this young man the highest possible offer from Michigan, then it becomes roster and payroll management for us.
If beating out UM’s best offer means we are going to be cash strapped maintaining our roster for ‘26, then we may not choose to go above our own max offer. No one seems to have mentioned this, and if they did, then I’m sorry for missing it. Said differently, if we go over slot for an elite RB like Hiter, there may not be enough dry powder left for the LSU WR and all of the raises that will be coming at season’s end.
Just something not to lose sight of. It’s not just playing time and scheme and where his GF is and where the nearest Waffle House is and etc etc.

I just don’t view everything from guys leaving a 3-7 program with looming sanctions to a waitress getting my order wrong as some massive conspiracy to keep Tennessee down. I know that many of you would have an identity crisis if things developed in a way that you couldn’t claim the world was out to get Tennessee, but we were free to take as many people from the portal within the open portal windows as anyone else when Heupel got here. Losing some guys because we were on shaky and uncertain ground was not a part of any punishment. It was definitely related to the situation but was not a punishment. To say “Michigan should have 25 scholarships reduced since we were shorthanded due to transfers” is just an asinine hill to die on.

We were in a worse position due to how everything played out, but our punishment was minuscule. Our roster was damaged by the possibility of sanctions, not the sanctions themselves.
