When playing a football game, what’s the goal?
So that means if you win you don’t even look at the things you need to improve on? Just go and buy the whole team ice cream cones and move on.

It ultimately cost us a playoff spot as well, so y’all can keep spinning all day like DJ Jazzy Jeff… secondary needs to improve and it’s absurd to act like that’s a nega thing to say.

Jazzy Jeff DID NOT asked to be brought into this cat fight. He’s a good man.

Point is every team has a weakness they need to improve on. And there’s not a single thing fans can do to make an improvement. And we won 11 games. And we are bringing in better talent. So the coaches are doing what is necessary to make improvements.

Salem has good players occasionally but the real hotbed in VA is the Tidewater area (Norfolk and Hampton Roads). It’s a long way to Knoxville from Tidewater but UVA sucks, UMD is nothing special and VT is down at the moment, so worth exploring.
Salem wins state almost every season

Team won the game and that’s all that matters. Overcame a major mental obstacle beating FL. That game is 100% positive and the impact of that win will be felt throughout the football program for years to come.

So yeah if everyone wanted to celebrate with ice cream cones then we be doin that, bruv.

So you think saying just win means you don’t look at the things you need to improve on? That’s dumb. I agree with you that the secondary needs to drastically improve. However think about it. Now this is hypothetical. But let’s just say we went undefeated this year and won the NC. And none of our wins were by more than 3 points. Would it matter?

You don’t think we can go from 36th to 20th?

Gave up 22.7 ppg, 36th in country.

20th place (Cincy) gave up 20.62.

Don’t have a repeat of USCe game and boom, top 20 defense.

No I don’t think we can honestly. I hope we can but I don’t see it.

Tennessee can eventually be 20th… it’ll require some talent infusion that Idk is completely there yet. Secondary tightening up and the pass rush being there in big games and not disappearing. I think we’ll see Tennessee be around 25-30th this season. Hopefully they surprise and are top 20! Would be awesome!

I guess if you ignore the SC game that cost us the playoffs then yeah the secondary wasn’t a problem.

But I agree it was very cool that we beat Florida.

Think it will largely depend on our edge rushers’ ability to pressure the quarterback. Somebody /somebodies will have to fill the void left by BY.

I think James Pearce has the talent to be one of the best pass rushers in the conference, but he’s still young and has to put the pieces together.

I don’t disagree with any of this. I just think the first part of improving a weakness is acknowledging it. But VN be VN’ing.

I’m not talking about hypotheticals. If you agree that the secondary needs to drastically improve, what’s the problem?

If we won every game with a bottom 5 pass defense I’d still say it needs to improve. Because it would be a fact. Would it be less of an issue? Sure, but it would bite us eventually.

Do you think in year two…. We should have been competing for the playoffs or did we play above our heads…. Here is our secondary from last year…
1. mark Burrell…. Out for the yewr
2. kamal Hadden…. Came to Tennessee bc he couldn’t win playing time at Auburn
3. Turnage…. Recruited over at Bama( reports that he was lost in the secondary)
4. Charles…. Athlete recruited for safety that they pushed into corner out of necessity
5. Williams…. Missed all of fall camp so never made rotation
6. Wesley Walker…played 3 years at Ga Tech… starting two years and never made an all ACC team.
7. Doneiko Slaughter…. Not considered an outside corner but performed decent while in there
8. Flowers and McCullough…. We know what everyone thinks about them.
9. turrentine has barely earned playing time at two schools now

That looks like bottom of the sec talent wise that played much better as a unit than their individual parts… what did you expect from that group?

Idk… 96th? A lot of it was scheme because I don’t think the coaches had confidence that those guys could shut down. Hence the "bend but don’t break."

Are you listing a bunch of negatives about our DBs to try and convince me I’m wrong that the secondary needs to improve?? Lol idk what your point is.

Also who is Mark Burrell?

Are you talking about passing yards? That’s not how you judge this defense…. Yes, I am at a horse show and got in a hurry… I meant Warren Burrell…. Everyone feels it needs to improve but it improves through recruiting…. They did a really good job last year and was a big reason that we went 11-2

If you asked anyone on here what was the weakest part of our team last year, almost everyone would say the secondary. The coaches said it. But there are things that need to be taken into consideration when talking about it. That’s what people bring up.

While we lost our most experienced and very talented DE in Byron Young, we have a lot of very talented but young DE’s. I expect several of the 2 year ends to start showing out this year. We have a lot of seniors upfront as well. I feel like we are more talented at LB as well. If the back end can show improvement I think our D will be much better this year. We should be deeper across the board and that doesn’t hurt anything either. GBO
