Utah State opens as early Vegas favorite @Tennessee

Probably true. It's SEC vs. MWC.

Unfortunately, conference patches on jerseys don't make plays.

No. The talent that wears the patch does. You will find yourself severely out-talented. I have a hint for you-- if your players were that talented, they wouldn't be playing in the MWC. I'm not trying to be mean. It's just true.

What does this even mean? Are they playing paper football?

Our boys, at almost every position, will be larger, faster, and more talented than your crew.

I believe UT fans will have a lot of respect for the will and heart in a team that came to UT and was paid to take their loss with dignity.

Yes. They are very used to beating mid-major talent (well, in the last two years anyway). They have very little experience lining up against SEC talent year in and year out. There is a distinct difference.

There is a very strong culture that understands how to play in mid-major games. That culture did little good against an anemic USCw team that got Lane Kiffin fired last year, BYU, etc...

I am also predicting a war-- for perhaps a quarter or a half, after which talent and depth become an issue. I am predicting that UT either blows you out or takes the foot off the accelerator to let you keep your dignity, along with the pay-out that we gave you to come in and take the loss and tune us up in our first game.

Should be fun. I'm really looking forward to it.

We have won 22 consecutive home openers. I expect nothing different this year. You guys have a nice team but reality is what it is. Come and enjoy the weekend. You will be treated with class and if you aren't all tied up in the results of the game you should enjoy the experience.

As am I. I think that it will be a very good indication of how our talent is gelling under the new schemes, as well as our staff's ability to get the team up/ready. I hope for a good game with no injuries for either team, after which I hope for a great year for Utah St.

Good to talk football with someone besides ourselves. Be sure to hang around after O/W game. It's a wasteland on here till SEC media days.

It will be fun to see some of the real predictions and betting lines that come out over the next several months.

Looking forward to the game.

I have no idea how our team will be this year with all of the turnover on the offensive and defensive line. If the game is close then I will tip my hat to USU and worry deeply about the remainder of our season.

My official line prediction is 13.5 points based on nothing.

I will be surprised if it is that large... based on everything.

No offense to USU, but if this game is close it won't bode well for the remainder of our season with the likes of Oklahoma, Georgia, and Bama lying in wait.

Vegas wants an equal amount of money bet on each side. Anything in the single digits would put too much action on the Tennessee side.

Most early predictions put UT somewhere between 5th and 7th in the SEC East. Wins will again be hard to come by in the SEC.

The OOC is:

Utah State (41)
Arkansas State (73)
@Oklahoma (10)
Chatanooga (unranked)

* Massey Composite Rankings from end of season added.

UT was ranked #61 at the end of last season.

Massey Composite is built up with the data from the top 119 polls, ranking systems, and computer models.

Help me out here. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. No one here is projecting a SEC championship, nor a MNC. We expect some lumps this season because we have another brutal schedule.

We are saying that we will more than likely thump USU handily, but it should be a good test and a good indicator of team improvement from last year.

With all that said, what else are you seeking to add to the dialog?

Remember when Wyoming beat Tennessee at Tennessee? I believe THAT Tennessee team was more talented than THIS Tennessee team.

Early predictions have you down for 1-2 SEC wins, again.

You probably have 2-3 OOC opportunities to record a W.

That sounds a lot like 4-5 wins to me.

What are UT fan expectations going in? I'm hearing a lot of 8 win benchmarks. I just don't see where they would come from.

Tennessee cant get to 8 wins without a huge upset.

They wont beat Bama(home), UGA(road), USC(road), Ole Miss(road), or Oklahoma(road)
They will beat USU(home), Chatt(home), Arky State(home), Vandy(basically home), and Kentucky (home)
They have a decent chance of beating Florida or Mizzou since both games are in Knoxville

Wildcards will be:

1. What happens if the QB position continues to be a disaster, especially with a new O-line and really young receivers and backs

2. Who, if anyone (existing players or new recruits) will step up and be game changers this year. So many are so young, you just never know.

So, 5-7 to 7-5. I really dont see it being any worse or better than that.

I mostly agree on your wins and losses predictions.

Mizzou and Florida predicted to finish higher than UT this year, but you do get them at home. Those will be interesting.

I'm just not seeing the 8-9 wins that some are talking about.

I also think you are somewhere in that 5-7 to 7-5 range. A bad loss or a really good win could really swing things for the vols this year.

Remember when Wyoming beat Tennessee at Tennessee? I believe THAT Tennessee team was more talented that the team THIS Tennessee team will field this year.

Yes they beat us. Mid season game. Not the opener we were asleep at the wheel, coaching and player issues. Again asleep oner confident and made a bod decision not to take them seriously. A few critical injuries and we were coming off of Bama or USC game.

Season openers at home are different. The projected line for this game USU really does us a favor in that it tells or players we cannot overlook you not a cake walk and that you are a So Alabama type team versus an Austin Peay.

Sometimes players don't realize how bad or good they are until a mid level team comes in and hands them a loss or a challenge. I hope Vegas favors USU by 7 pts because it's the best fuel you can provide for motivation to earn respect without having to say anything.

What kills me is that some opposing fans state that we cannot use our tradition and history as part of our debate to counterpoint their arguments, but they are the first ones in their arguments to bring it up.

Every National Championship Team has at least one close game every season it seems against a team they were favored to beat handily. It happens. However it very really happens or has ever happened the first game of the season.

Oh, I agree. The thing is early in the season hope springs eternal. A close game or a loss to USU crushes that.

I would agree with that.

I think USU is a lot better than people give them credit for, but if it's a really close game, the coordinators may feel their seat warming up.

If UT fires the coach five days before the UTU game and emotionally guts this team, I'll revise my prediction. Deal?
