I have always wanted to attend a game at Knoxville. For my birthday, my wife got us tickets to the UT/Bama game.
We are spending Friday night in Knoxville.
What are some "can't miss" things that we need to do while we are there?
Thanks.

Get to the game early so you can watch the Vol Walk (about 2 1/2 hrs before the game) and the band enter the stadium. For a good burger go to Littons.

I'm just curious, do you have any ties to Tenn? I'm assuming you're an A&M fan

I would definately try to get dinner at Calhouns on the river Friday night. I went to the Florida game (first game since 2001) and had a good time at Calhouns.
There will be fans of both teams there and you will see the Vol Navy begin to dock.
Pre game I would just cruise the strip (on foot). Plenty of tailgating and bars to enjoy.

If you're into sushi, my friend Greg owns an awsome place called Nama, and its on South Gay Street downtown. Also, if you're looking to have a beer, you should stop by Cool Beans, which is a little college bar right off of "the strip", which is the main drag through campus.

For a good steak at a place with some local flair, you should get on Chapman Highway, and go to Ye Ole Steak House (about 15min from downtown).

Have fun!

My wife did the exact same thing (except we bought season tickets and sold the others for profit).

Looking for tips on how to get bottled water into the game... I don't want to pay $3.50 for tap water that supports Mike Hamilton and the current administration. Any tips?

It has gotten more difficult to sneak things into games with the increased security so I don't I would try it.
On the up side though, the men with the rubber gloves are surprisingly gentle! :naughty:

if its cool wear a jacket, stuff 'em in there.
or a hoody with them in the front pocket.
depending on your style of dress, maybe a couple in your back pockets if your shirt or jacket is long enough...
BUT, are you sure its water you're wanting to sneak in???

Sneak it in like it was not tap water. If you go in gate 21 with the rush of the crowd after the band the odds are good you don't get checked unless you put it in a bag or purse. Even if it is taken, you still get to go in the game.

Focus on smuggling in an empty bottle, cup, or container and fill it up at the water fountain. It is much easier to smuggle in an empty container. Worst case, only buy one drink and refill at the water fountain.

Nama is one of our favorite restaurants -- pass along our praise to your buddy. Agreed on the Ye Olde recommendation, as well. Whoever mentioned Calhouns: he's from Texas. . . .guessing he's had better than the overrated schwag BBQ served there. If you want to dine by the river, go to Ruth's Chris.

To the original poster:

I (personally) would avoid Cool Beans unless you are college-aged. There are much better bars to hit than a dingy converted Mr. Gatti's. Preservation Pub at Market Square has an extensive beer list, Downtown Grill and Brewery has some decent choices, and Sapphire on Gay Steet is cool if you're looking for a more "sophisticated" crowd.

There are tons of other options out west, but I'm guessing you want to stay downtown. Let me know if otherwise.

No Tenn ties.
UT (the real UT, we refer to the University of Texas as tu) is just one of those places that comes to mind when you are sitting at a tailgate, drinking beer, and discussing which college football venues you must see in a lifetime.
I have season tickets to Texas A&M, but this is an away game at Iowa St. I have made the trip to Ames before. I am sure Knoxville will be much more fun and memorable.

Thanks kiddiedoc. I am scaring the hell outta 40.
I would hate to walk into a place and have people look around and say, "Somebody's dad is here."

Definitely go to Littons for the burgers and if you want a nicer place for dinner try Regas Restaurant. My wife and I were in there right after the UT/Vandy game last fall and saw Eric Ainge w/ his date. I started to give him a Roll Tide, but figured it would best if we finished our meal in peace.
