UT vs Bama @ Birmingham Inquiry

I thought i would use this thread to make my first post. Bama guy here from Bham, but not one who'll just drop a "UT sux" and then run.

Legion Field used to be a great place and has many great memories for me, but has been neglected for too long. It is in Bham, not Fairfield, about 3 miles west of downtown and 65 and a mile south of 20/59. The neigborhood is indeed an armpit of a ghetto (it wasn't getto in that area when built though). UA played the 3 or 4 bigger games in Bham because until 1988, the capacity of LF was about 15,000 more than BDS. Auburn moved it's home game to campus as soon as the contract for the Iron Bowl in Bham expired in 1987. Bama renewed a contract for 10 more years and had agreeded to play either the Auburn game or Tennessee game in Bham (alt years) each year. That contract expired after the '98 season, so the Bama-UT game went back to Tucscaloosa in 1999 and the Iron Bowl was back in Tusc in 2000.

I haven't seen any Tennessee fans treated badly in Tuscsaloosa (in 2003 and 2007). And i must say that we were treated very well for both my trips to your place in 2002 and 2008 ( I can pick 'em, can't I) - even sat amongst UT students in section CC in '02.

That said watching a game in Tuscaloosa is 1000% better than what Legion Field had.

Looking forward to discussions with your guys in which we'll probably agree about almost nothing.

Semi off topic, but what is a game in Tuscaloosa like? It seems on TV that UT fans always travel in numbers to T-town. Are the fans rude?

I've been twice. Had popcorn dumped all over me (05) and coke thrown at me (07). But I enjoyed my trips, both times. A buddies girlfriend got verbally threatened... But there are classless fans at every stadium. I'd go back given the chance. It is a great college town.

My most fond UT-UAT memory was at Legion.

Manning to Kent on the first play.

What a nightmare. I was there myself - that was my first Bama-UT game as a student. Worst beating i've ever had to witness in person. Although seeing us get waxed by Arkanasas in Fayetteville in '98 42-6 was no fun either.

The worst i've ever gotten in person from a UT fan (in seriousness) was in 1991 - I was selling cokes for my hs baseball team and this lady had to be at least 70 something ragged on me the entire time i was in voice range - and we were in bham.

tuscaloosa isn't much better but its is better than birmingham.

I am not sure why you think that. There aren't tons of places to park, a traffic problem, but there is usually not much trouble. It is not that bad of an area.. i have never left my car and thought it might not be there when i get back. I have left my '06 Chevy Cobalt on a lonely street until past midnight with no problems.
Opposing fans tend to get treated well too.. of course there are exceptions.

And yes, the bad the about Bryant-Denny.. the enormous Upper Deck ramps.

My wife was an Alabama coed at the 1972 game. Some crazy old drunk UT fan started beating her with his umbrella until a couple of UT students stopped him until a stadium cop showed up to take him away. She's never been much of a UT fan ever since even though her father played for Neyland.

Why isn't the UT and Bama game held in Birmingham anymore? The last time the game was played in that stadium was in 1997. Does UAB have anything to do with this? Was the game held in UAB's stadium or something?

Bama wanted games back in Tuscaloosa. As the contracts ran out on games they had contracted for B'Ham, they moved back home. The stadium has run down

That is the worst stadium I have ever personally been to and I have been to many including the old orange bowl...Ugh...Nasty place and in one of the worse ghetto's you have ever seen....Had to be really careful were you parked your car around there lol...Come back and parts would be missing or the entire thing at times....not a very good stadium to see a game at really, tuscaloosa isn't much better but its is better than birmingham.

don't see how you can compare tuscaloosa with b'ham. i went to our 07 game, and there is no comparison, none.tuscaloosa might not be up with ours, but it's definitely up there. on another note, miami sux.i know because i lived there.i went to the miami-notre dame game in 1989. there is no worse nightmare than the old orange bowl!!

Birmingham city had something to do with it too. They were pressuring UA to play UAB. While I'd like to see that game, I don't think the city government should have been involved as much as they were. Basically, there is some bad blood and I think UA was glad to get out of Legion field.

My first game to ever see when I was little was UT vs. Bama at Legion Field. Unfortunately, we lost, but I had a great time anyway.

Been to the 3rd Saturday in October at Bama a few times...97 (Legion Field), 99 (BDS), 01 (BDS), and I never saw anyone treated poorly. There's some heckling back and forth, but I witnessed more of that in Gainesville & Athens. Legion Field is cool b/c it's historic, but it's a shame that it wasn't taken better care of.
