Going to try my hand at being an usher for the first time at Neyland this year. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
If you meet an older man about 5’10”, white mustache, wearing a white Tennessee jersey with #79 and “Tin Man” across the shoulders, introduce yourself, and escort me to the Chancellor’s box. 😉

My dad has been an usher for a number of years now. My dad is now 78 years old so he doesn't move as well as he used to but I would recommend bringing your own chair if you are going to need to rest at any point and time. They do not provide chairs. Also my dad found out really fast that unless you are a younger person you do NOT want to usher the student section. He finally had to resort to getting the KPD to handle students that would listen to him. People can be very rude at times. Outside of that my dad loves it. He has met a bunch of great people and made a lot of friends. He ushers football , MBB and WBB and softball. He used to do baseball but doesn't do that any longer.

Get to know or at least recognize your regulars. You don't have to worry about 99% of them and a lot of them will help you.

Watch the constantly flipped/resold seats, especially visitors in groups of more than 4 or so. That's where the biggest amount of problems come from (at least where we sit).

Stay way ahead of the issues if you can.

so, what is the process for becoming an usher? is it an application process or referral from another usher?

What are the expectations for arrival and departure to man your station?

I think this is an intriguing topic. Something I have occasionally thought about doing.

My mom has been an usher for the last 7 years at football, mens and womens bball, and baseball. The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is do NOT be too focused on the game. Everyone ushering is a fan to some level, but they have fired ushers for not doing their jobs and just watching the games.

I believe they have to be there 30 mins before the gates open, so 3ish hours before kickoff. And they must stay till the game ends.
If I remember correctly this is correct. They may have to stay a little longer afterwards depending on what section you usher.

My dad has done a few times where he manned the gate where the TV crews came in to set up the day before. He said that was pretty fun to see some of the tv people coming in and out and all the prep work that goes in to it.

Call the Events Management Office and they will provide you the links to the process. The number is 865.974.1205
