UT ugliest SEC campus?

If UT would buy out the railroad and push that operation to the other side of the river, UT could extend their campus all the way to the river. Add a park, some dorms on the waterfront, get rid of the Spam-Can, the humanities tower, and the humanities building, and UT would look much, much better.

I am a rising 5th year architecture student and I have always wanted to do something with those railroad tracks and water treatment facility. I am seriously considering doing my project dealing with this for the upcoming year. Campus would improve 100x if we were able to do this.

Given that our parking pass is now adjacent to the water treatment facility, I would love to see it changed. However, it seems that with the plumbing connections, that would be a huge undertaking.

getting in our out of athens on a game day is a frickin disaster.... I know some people want to believe getting around after a game in knoxville is bad.... athens is easily the worst! stop and go on 316 for 50 miles... what a joke... allthough leaving tuscaloosa is pretty awful as well..... just a horrible system to get out!

The only reason I think people really dog UT's campus is because it's literally on top of downtown... otherwise outside of the palm trees at UF... I really don't think one campus is that much better or worse for that matter as far as appearance. Seriously. The schools and buildings on the campuses across the SEC don't look all the different from town to town.

the drive to Athens from Atlanta is almost always a major pain in the ass but it's an absolute living hell on game weekends.

No doubt about it. However, with the whole master plan debate going on now and talks of the master plan taking approximately 50 years, I have thought about presenting it to the board if I decide to make this a project of mine. It would more than likely in the end not happening, but imagine the possibilities of our campus if it actually incorporated the river instead of turning its back on it like it does now. It is very disappointing in some ways because I see more potential in our campus than I have in any other campus I have been to. It will take time and Lots of $$$ but it would be an exceptional and beautiful part of campus.

UT's campus is no worse than Ole Miss's, Florida's, Auburn's. I remember liking Bama's campus and LSU's campus when I visited. Starkville is simply terrible though.

UT's campus isn't the worst in the SEC, but it definitely isn't the best....and it's not in the same league as Ole Miss, Bama and UGA. As much as I hate UGA, Athens is a really cool college town.

I've been to every SEC venue but Starkville, and based on feedback from anyone that's been there, I have no plans to visit anytime soon.

One thing I like about UF's campus is the consistent architecture. The newer buildings on campus have the same look and design of older buildings that have been around for over 70 years. Game day isn't the best gauge of how nice the campus is because many tailgaters along University Ave completely trash the area where they set up.

Of the SEC venues I've visited, I'd rank 'em like this....

1. Ole Miss
2. UGA
3. Bama
4. LSU
5. Auburn
6. UT
7. Arkansas
8. Vandy
9. Kentucky
10. South Carolina

When I was there, in 94-99 they referred to UTK as the concrete jungle; not easy on the eyes

I like Vandys campus and location.

Hard to dislike Vandy's campus and location. Nashville may not have a true college town feel, but being right off West End, in the middle of the largest city in SEC footprint aint bad. Too bad the students are all douches.

when I went the first time for my college trip, I remember thinking "this is nice, but it's nothing special". while you can argue we have the rock and the hill, everyone has their own traditions on campus. I like the campus beautification project. in terms of attracting recruits, anything you can do to make your campus stand out (in a good way) is something you should do.

South Carolina's campus is pretty crappy. That's mainly because the city of Columbia is a dump.

Two understatements.
South Carolina is the worst campus in the conference, hands down. Columbia is trash, and Billy Brice Stadium is off campus in an industrial concrete wasteland.

I live in the fort in the bounce house, and at least back this way its very gross at places around the house. And deff not easy on the eyes. Down western av, can be blamed some for the area as a whole. Then the bums right down the block towards Halls. THAT being said our campus is very fun, imo. And some of the places to eat arn't bad. There are much worse schools and campuses to be at. I went to Union College in KY when I played football for the past two years and this place is a GOD send lol. Some renovations would be nice for sure, but I love this place and call it home. It could be balls to the wall and everything 10 times crazier and I would still love it. Plus someone told me Bray moved a couple houses down from me, could be a lie. Hope we wreck this season bc I know where I'm strollin for the after games parties, haha.

What is the "Bounce" house? I've never heard of that (I've lived in the fort 3 years now). I think a lot of athletes stay in Gibbs if I'm not mistaken, so I'm not sure about the Bray thing.

SC's campus is scattered across town. I'd say it is definitely in in the bottom fourth of campuses in the conference.

OK, UT still has a nice campus. Some of the buildings are older but I think it is still very pretty.

there's no way you've ever been to Ole Miss's campus

Many times. Routinely once every few months between 2000-2004. Have you ever been there for something other than a game day? Ever seen "The Grove" with no one in it? Ever been inside the Tad Pad?

Most of the buildings look like the ones in Starkville that everyone is railing against. Plus, the place is in But***ck Mississippi on a cleared off dirt patch.

it's all in the eye of the beholder... talking about the architecture building. it's supposed to be a symbol of architectural progression as well as stand out from the other buildings on campus. i don't think it is ugly at all, plus they cut its budget a bit so that actual design wasn't able to become a complete reality. when i was touring the campus as a high school senior i was blown away by the architecture building; that and combined with the overall ranking of the program are why i chose t come to UT.

Apparently the Architorture program has improved substantially since I was on The Hill. I spent two years in the concrete coffin and promptly switched to Sport Management.

The art/architecture building is still a hideous eyesore. I'm sure 90% of the students working in it could come up with something better. The long term masterplan of the university should (and I think mostly does) contain retrofits or replacements of the 70's concrete monolith buildings.

+ 1,000,000

Wish I had thought of that while I was in school. Would have been much more fun that some of the projects I did. :hi:
