Re: New Smoking Policy

The University has a new statewide safety policy on smoking.

The policy (SA0900-Smoking) is being implemented in compliance with the Tennessee Non-Smoker Protection Act. Key provisions of the policy include the following prohibitions:

* Smoking is prohibited in all buildings owned or operated by the University;

* Entrances to all University buildings are designated as smoke free, and smoking is prohibited within twenty-five (25) feet of all doorways, windows, and ventilation systems of all University buildings. All designated smoking entrance signs on buildings will be removed and all cigarette urns will be removed or moved at least 25 feet away from buildings;

* Smoking is prohibited in all motor vehicles owned, leased, or operated by the University;

* The policy applies to all University officials, employees, students, and visitors;

* University employees may report violations of the policy to their immediate supervisor, the next level of supervision, or the University employee directly responsible for the University facility where a violation occurs. Violations also may be reported by employees, students, or others to the campus/institute human resources office or to the University-Wide Institutional Compliance office (865-974-4438). Violations may be reported anonymously to the State Comptroller's Fraud Hotline at 1-800-232-5454; and

* Any University employee found to have violated the policy may be subject to discipline as set forth in University Policies HR0525 and HR0580. Any student found to have violated the Smoking Policy may be subject to discipline in accordance with campus procedures.

The smoking policy can be found on the University policies website at:

Dear Lord. I don't even smoke and I want to go smoke at every doorway, vent and window at UT just to prove how ridiculous this dumbass rule is. You can keep your 'safety policy' to yourself. I pay a lot of money to go to school here, and if I want to take a smoke break outside of the building my class is in, I'm going to.

It killed both my grandfathers, but if I want to smoke I'm going to smoke. The public castration of smokers is insane. If they want to, let them. I personally don't smoke and probably never will, but if smoking gives these people some kind of joy who am I to say they can't. IF I smoked, and a professor came up to me and told me to put it out within 25 feet of the building, I would respectfully tell them to blow it out their a**

A lot of things cause cancer. And a lot of things kill people. If someone wants to smoke, it's their right. It isn't illegal to buy. Why the hell should it be illegal to smoke outside in certain places? It's stupid.

I'll give you that. But how can you say smoking outside is any way detrimental to anyone's health but the smoker?

I smoke. That's a Portland city wide statute. Nobody complains. Deal with it.

I guess when a majority doesn't want the smell of a stupid smoker... They can change the rules...

Outside or not... Second hand smoke effects more than just the smoker.

Says who? So you're saying that smoke that dissipates into the atmosphere from a smoker is going to harm you in a irreversible way? I find that very hard to believe. Eating too much can kill you. Taking too much vitamin c can kill you. The whole 'everyone shouldn't smoke' argument is ridiculous, and like I said, I'm not even a smoker.

What if it's raining? You gonna tell someone they can't smoke their cigarette under an awning, and that they have to go out in the rain to do it? That's f'n ridiculous and not your damn right, regardless of what this policy says. I just don't understand why the smoker get's put through the ringer all the time in our society.

I am a reformed smoker since 98. I am disgusted by smoking now. I cringe when I pull up to any red light or stop sign and look down on the ground and see thousands of cigarette butts littering the ground. Smokers flicking out butts down here in Florida are responsible for a lot of wild fires and can be ticketed for the act. I have several friends that are smokers and only a couple are "courteous smokers" that realize how it affects non-smokers. Especially myself now because I have allergic reactions to second hand smoke now and my breathing is severely affected by it. I say smoke where ever you want, but be conscious of the people around you.
