UT Running Game Explained

When the coaching staff feels we have to throw the ball on 3rd and 2 because we can not count on the RBs & OL to get the 1st down, says alot about where we are as a running football team. It seems we have about 10 300+ pound guys who can bench press a house yet can't push a 200 pound LB back 6 inches. Alot of people want to point to the scheme. I question the effort and commitment to the run game. They do a hell of a job at protecting Bray, they just could not open a hole for one of our RB's playing against Maryville HS's DLine.

Or perhaps it means our coaches know the best thing to do in a football game, is exactly what the other team doesn't expect you to do. Run on passing downs. Play action on running downs.

So wait, if we score a lot. The opposition will get desperate, and our turnover prone defense will thrive off of the mistakes. Sal is happy. I don't need an explanation for a smart philosophy change.

Play action only works if you can run the ball. Need to play some conference teams before we know if we can run the ball or not.

That is not true at all.

If teams are reading the run and playing it and stopping you at the line for zero yards >>> then they they get a big "high" and want to keep crushing the run.

I'm sure that is what it is. The fact that CDD mentions our issues and problems running the football in every media session is just his way of throwing off our future opponents.

Our running stats are skewed by a couple CP reverse / option runs. I wouldn't consider gadget plays part of our running package.

My concern is I do not believe we have the ability to convert 3rd and 3, 4th and 2 on critical drives. I hope I am proven wrong!

The key to all of this, and I think some people are still nervous to say this out loud, is that we have an elite QB. I mean, elite from the standpoint of the best guy under center since Peyton. Have you guys (generalization) truly watched some of the throws he makes? He had one against GA ST, where, after a pump fake he's completely flat footed and slings it side arm for about 20 yards, right in the numbers, and more importantly IN STRIDE. I remember watching Peyton his first game and simply marveled at how he could hit guys in stride. There are very few guys that can do that consistently and Tyler is one of them. He continues to get better and, even though nobody will ever be able to read defenses like Peyton, he has a rocket arm that only a few guys have enjoyed in their lives. Favre and Elway come to mind.

So, a little rant, but let's just say it out loud and echo Rivera, "we have the best QB in the country", and hope he stays healthy and truly enjoy this guy while he is here. For the coaches to understand this and set us up to rely on him and our wideouts is, to me, an excellent statement about where we are headed. Hopefully our next great player will be akin to Bo Jackson and we can marvel at that. For now, I'm enjoying the hell out of watching these guys catch bullets from TB!!

Go VOLS!! I want something like 45-13 on Saturday!!

You do not have to run to convert those :salute:

I don't even think we have a problem running the football. It just appears that way because our passing game is so effective.

If you had deion sanders and darrelle revis at corner, you'd probably be answering questions about when your run defense is going to get better.

I've watched our first 2 games a couple of times each. (love pause, reverse and slow mo) I just don't think our oline is the problem. Time and time again I can see our rb's stutter stepping instead of hitting the hole hard.
I do see improvement between the first half of the nc game and the ga. st game.
If you look at Watson in the 2nd half, he was hitting the hole like a rb should, being so small I was afraid someone would break him but he was hitting the hole everytime he touched the ball. Maybe Lane and Neal will see that in the film room and learn something.
