UT recruiting study: A road map for getting back

In four days, Butch Jones will sign his first class at Tennessee, and although the Vols hope to land some high-profile targets, it won't be ranked among the best in the nation — or even close to it. Three consecutive losing seasons and three coaching changes in just more than four years have taken their toll on a program that once competed with anyone on the recruiting trail.

So how does Tennessee get back to the days when elite recruiting classes were routine? It's one thing to talk about how a new coach must elevate the level of recruiting; it's another to determine how to do it.

Too bad we can't erase Kiffin and Derek Dooley from Tennessee history books. I would like to think we went from Phil Fulmer straight to Butch Jones.

Roadmap:

1. Own our state (if we signed nothing but tn recruits this year, there's enough 4 stars for a top 5 or top 10 class).
2. Own Atlanta
3. Own Charlotte

This story was well made. But, no where in it was a discussion on the quality of players. Basically at one point, the article said our recruitment in the state of Florida since 2005 has been misplaced. I couldn't disagree more. Florida isn't for a lack of talent. It's been a top 2 or 3 state for recruiting ever since I can remember. It's the quality of talent that we've signed from the state that's been a waste. In that span from 2005-2012, the only good players I can remember coming from Fl are Pig Howard and Curt Maggitt. The rest are bunch of chumps that I can't remember ever seeing the feild and had no other offers from good schools.

I do agree we need to keep TN's best players in TN. But beyond that, this "research" into geography and how it has historically impacted the Vols and their recruiting success is insane. GET THE BEST PLAYERS. Regardless of where they are from. Years down the road, nobody remembers where a player is from. Was he good or not?

road map back huh ? getting dools and kiffin gone is a big plus to getting back i honestly think bUTch is a beast, on the recruiting trail

Lately, we get mostly the UF, FSU and the U rejects from the state of Florida. Same with GA, AL and LA to some extent. Probably the best we can do until we start winning again and have enough home grown talent to fill the roster with quality players. If we can win 8 to 9 games per year in next 2 years, things will turn around.

letting curt phillips go to wisconsin was a huge mistake. coach cut dropped the ball on that one, almost as bad as arian foster lol. dude would be a beast in CBJ's offense

I think some of Fulmer's recruiting success was from him selling UT's history & traditions. He could tell a kid how much it means to put on the orange jersey & how big football is at UT. I could be wrong but I doubt that stuff was being talked about as much to recruits under Kiffin & Dooley. I get the feeling CBJ & this staff will again emphasize our rich history & traditions to recruits like Fulmer did. Some may think that stuff doesn't really matter to kids these days but I think it can definitely still be an advantage if it's used correctly. Was it a big reason Fulmer had so much early success recruiting? Probably not but I think it did make a difference. JMO

Memphis and West Tn puts out tremendous talent, but over the years Ole Miss, Bama, Ark and other schools have had their way. This has to change. Time the Vols get the better talent from that area.

Absolutely. That is one of the advantages of having a former player/graduate of the program as head coach. It wasn't merely a sales pitch for Fulmer; it was a knowledgeable expression of heartfelt sincerity. For all of his onfield strategic limitations, Fulmer had the reputation, among head coaches, as having few peers, as a closer, when it came to recruiting.

I know one thing when we actually do get good again this town will be insane. After so many down years the top will blow off this place. (well you know what I mean)
