I've seen on here all day posters *****ing about Butch not bringing in a big name DC that would help us in recruiting. We have no idea how Jancek will work out and you already want a change? We have a fairly low ceiling with recruiting right now until we win games. Winning will bring the recruits no matter who the DC is.

Think I'm wrong? Answer this without looking:

Who is the DC at South Carolina?
Who is the DC at A&M?

Winning will help recruiting no matter the DC.

In-state talent for both those teams is leaps and bounds ahead of what we have, A&M's in particular.

No one would disagree, but the good ones that are in TN end up not coming here. That's the problem.

You seriously trying to make a point out of a team that is in the state of Texas? A&M made the smartest move they could have made coming to the SEC..

Tennessee needs the state talent to get better in a hurry.. All these teams around us have good coaches.. Just trying to sell UT anymore doesn't cut it..

I don't care if our DC is a good recruiter or not. Coordinators need to be good coaches. Chavis can't recruit, and LSU is doing ok. I just hope Jancek can coach, if he can do that I'll be a happy man. Of course my wife would be a better DC than we had last year.

I think the talk about Jancek came from Lawson saying he was blah to speak with and a nobody. He raved about EJ and how he was a legend as a coach.

Just guessing that's where it started.

This is not going to be a quick fix. We should have learned that lesson four years ago. Tennessee isn't in the "reload" category. It has to rebuild. My theory a few months ago was that Tennessee had to either hire a great recruiter that could overcome the natural recruiting disadvantages in the SEC or a great x and o guy who can coach up lesser talent like Chris Petersen. We know we didn't get the first. We'll see if we got the second. Won't know until September.

jancek is a legitimate question mark. he was when CBJ hired him. his last 2 seasons at Cinci were statistically pretty good, but he was co-DC iirc. so how much of their success was attributable to him? add to that the fact that he was one of the few coaches that mark richt has ever fired and it's normal for one to wonder if he was the right choice.

I concur 100%. Chavis didn't recruit, but didn't have to. The coach that I would like a do-over on is Mahoney for Pittman.

I hope I'm proven wrong, but I think we should have gone after Shannon for DC. I'm not confident about jancek

The state of TN had three players in the top 30.

South Carolina is not leaps and bounds ahead of TN in producing BCS talent.... check your facts....BCS Signees 2002-2010: Home states of players
You're right.. Having Steve Spurrier in SC and a Clemson team that's pretty good hurts our presence there.. North Carolina hiring Fedora doesn't help either.. When Tennessee was good, they were getting just about who they wanted out of both of those states. That doesn't happen any more..

I think Jancek will be ok. He has a reputation of being conservative. Make teams put drives together, and not give up the big play etc. Our D next year will probably look a lot like Wilcox's when he was DC. Like I said earlier anything is better than last year.

I would have kept Pittman as well, but we'll see how Mahoney does. Obviously CBJ thinks he can get done.

The good news is that the midstate and east Tennessee is getting better every year.

Spurrier's name recruits itself. It may not be what it was in 1997, but if I was a recruit and USC was interested, I'd definitely consider the chance to play for a coach like him. It's the same as it was with Paterno and Bowden, but probably even moreso because Spurrier is considered a better game day coach and offensive mind than either of those two.
