Give the UT QBs grades, dating back to the Heath Shuler days.

Shuler: A
Peyton: A
Martin: B+
Clausen: B+
Rick Clausen: C
Ainge: A-
Crompton: F
Stephens: D+

I know most of you probably think that Ainge rated too high, but he put up great numbers his Jr. and Sr. year. We had our 2 worst defenses of the decade in 2006 and 2007, so that's not Ainge's fault. Clausen always had great defenses, and Ainge didn't. I know he had a few bad games (like the SEC championship), but I still believe he's been the best QB on our team since Peyton. Tee Martin was great, but had so much more help around him. Also, remember, we had ZERO RBs in 2006. What Ainge was able to do with no running game that year was just short of amazing.

I think we forget just how good Tee Martin was. The dude could throw but man could he run.

Tee was great, but remember, he had SOOOO much more help than Ainge did. I mean, compare Jamal Lewis, Travis Stephens, Travis Henry, Peerless Price, Cedric Wilson to Arian Foster, Montario Hardesty, Lucas Taylor, and Robert Meachem...advantage Martin.

Plus, Martin had 2 great defenses in '98 and '99 to back him up.

Ainge had the worst defense in UT history in '07 backing him up...

Shuler- A

Manning- A

Martin- A+ championship plus a much better passer than people generally remember

Clausen- C... I'm feeling generous. No other player embodies the decline of UT under CPF than Casey Clausen. Not his fault... he just represents that 2nd tier of talent that UT fell into

Ainge- C+ The avg of a B, an A, and a big ol' whoppin F.

Crompton- Incomplete

Martin wasn't the only player on that team. UT had top notch talent in '98 and '99. They had something like 7 first and second round draft picks in the 2000 NFL draft.

Ainge didn't have NEAR the talent Martin did.

If you put Tee Martin on Ainge's teams, I doubt Tee plays as well as Ainge did.

Notre Dame wouldn't have caught Martin to break his collarbone. They'd still be chasing him right now in fact.

But even in a quick pass O he didn't come close to Martin's consecutive completion record... and never produced a championship. Say what you will but most of those guys were on the team with Manning as well. Would you argue that Ainge was better than PM?

Maybe you want to think that through a little better?

One of Tee's greatest strengths was pulling it down and making things happen when the play broke down. THat would have made both the 06 and 07 teams much stronger had Ainge possessed that talent.

Martin dropped more bombs than the Japs at Pearl Harbor; I'll take Martin any day.

Does Tee not deserve some of the blame for his senior year if he get a lot of credit for national title?

The team his senior underachieved (with the talent) probably more than any other UT team. Loaded with talent and went 9-3.

Hey SJT...you make some great points, but of course I'd say Peyton > Ainge. You say that Peyton had the same talent as Martin, but don't even begin to compare that '97 defense to the '98 defense. The '97 defense was not very good...and neither was the '96 defense. Talented, yes, but the '98 defense had 100x better chemistry, and they tackled WAY better than the Peyton defenses.

If we had the '98 defense in the Peyton Manning days, we'd probably win a national championship as well.

1. If not for Martin, that 1999 season would have been a lot worse.
Yes, he had help at RB, but he had no help at WR (not to mention that Jamal Lewis showed up for about 3 games that season, and he wasn't much help). Cedrick Wilson was hardly Peerless, Stallworth never played, and Eric Parker was out.
Tee carried us in games that we were the lesser ranked team, against Alabama and Georgia, winning SEC player of the week in both.

Tee played through a seperated shoulder, a fractured non-throwing wrist, and that horrendous hit in the UF game where Alex Brown rammed his face into the TV camera, knocking out his teeth.

Tee Martin was a warrior.

2. It was the same defensive personnel that we had in 1996.

3. Take out the yards for sacks, and Martin rushed for 600+ yards both of his seasons.

If it was the same personnel they would have two years of experience which is huge.

I'm on the "Martin had way better talent" bandwagon. You can't compare Jamal Lewis and Arian Foster. But, I'd give them both As.

T. Martin is why I really think passing on Tahj Boyd will be the one big mistake Kiffin made at this point. Dude plays alot like Martin did.
