1. Crompton was a VHT recruit who never really panned out until this year. Very uneven passing ratio before 2009.

2. You guys have had some Wr injuries and departures that have not helped the passing game recently.

3. UT uses Zone-Pass Blocking; and they are dang good at such. Tons of play-action passing behind that.

4. UT Passing struggled early with the new O-Cord Chaney's and LK's new scheme(s). Though found its form after the FLA game and is much much better today than it was at the close of August camp.

5. Here is my big question ... looks like UT favors a read or two, then checking down to short to intermediate routes if the 1 or 2 longer ones do not come open.
When UT does throw long, I saw a lot of middle of the field big-gainers to either the Tight-End or the Jones kid or something along the sidelines.

Is this correct?
TIA.

Most of the long gainers this year were seam routes when the defense played cover-0, cover-1, or cover-2.

So what you're saying is that we threw it down the middle . . . and when we didn't do that we threw to the outside. And we threw a lot to the TE, but when we didn't do that we threw to a WR?

Ha-ha. No Sir.

I'm revising this section of my UT offensive preview to account for the academic ineligibility of Virg'.

1. UT clearly mixed it up where they threw the ball. Te's got more looks than the average D-1 offense. Hardesty got a number of throws as well (5th most in point of fact). Not quite a primarily Wr reliant passing attack; by and large.
2. More sophisticated as a play-action based passing attack goes. Clearly some Professional looking elements here; that I presume are Rams and Raider X's and O's refugees.
3. When UT does throw deep;where would you say they most often throw and what pattern(s) does this favor specifically? TIA.

One thing you're missing is the RB's. Lane loves to get the RBs out in the flats, up the field on wheel routes and even hit the FB once this year deep up the middle on a fake ISO play.

Thank you.
Cody Grimm should be keen for that.
Though Johnson/Gibby and Rivers are not so precocious in pass-coverage as rookie 1st-year players. If Cody must help our replacement for Virg', that will expose the other 2 Lb's all the more. Not to mention hurting our run plugging chances vs. Hardesty.

UT hoped to enter the fall with 4 veteran WR's to tutor the young guys. Rogers was injured early on. Moore and Jones both had injuries that prevented them from participating in Fall Camp. After JC and Jones/Moore had a couple of weeks to get it together, UT's passing O was entirely different.

If 2 of the 3 mentioned had been available for August and entered the season in sync with JC then UT wins at least one and maybe two more games... and isn't your opponent. I feel confident they would have beaten UCLA, probably Auburn, and possibly even UF considering the way that game went.

Stocker could be the most difficult receiver match up for either team.

Also, notice on many of Crompton's reads he will have an intermediate throw, a deep threat, and a safety valve all on the same side of the field.

Kiffin talked extensively about simplifying the scheme for JC's sake. In essence, most throws are in a single quadrant of the field.

My favorite is the JC Rollout that came to form during the georgia game. This is what gave JC the confidence he needed for the remainder of the year, and should play a key role in Atlanta. Go Vols!! Merry Xmas!!

Yup. Good call. I am (re)watching Vandy and KU today and was seeing a one-sided approach to passing or as you adroitly state, a single "quadrant" to read.

Interesting that that had to be done for a senior level Qb? A underclass and I can get that. Is this because Crompton is not all that heady as reading coverages or field-vision goes? Or simply because this is the rookie year for all involved with Chaney's passing attack?

Nothing against Crompton, who has been so successful in the 2nd half of the year...but I cannot WAIT until Kiffin has a QB who can use the whole field on every play.

Talk about explosive.

Also due to having 4 offensive coordinators in his 5 years.

Kiffin's bread and butter, and the roll out's efficiency is multiplied by the zone blocking.
