Much as I like Peyton Manning as a player, the great unknown for me is whether he would be able to both recruit AND coach kids to have the drive and desire to be a student of the game that HE is.

Great players don't always make great coaches. Great coaches weren't always stellar college and/or pro players.

Just my opinion.

George Lapides (Memphis radio) opened his show this morning by saying that if Muschamp doesn't accept, he is betting Cutcliffe will rise to the top because that's who Peyton is pushing for hard behind the scenes.

wonder if Archine Manning would be interested... Hes done pretty good at making his boys into Football players.

I think Peyton will take his dads place as a sports broadcaster when and if he ever retires from the NFL. Personally I think he will follow Farvres footsteps and have to be forced out by every team in the leage before he is gone for good.

I'm pretty sure Peyton would have no trouble recruiting. And this WILL happen somewhere down the road, just a matter of when.

George Lapides is the Jimmy Hyams of Memphis, IMO.

Who can stand to listen to that clown try to stumble, fumble, and stutter his way through a two sentences?

Usually the best coaches are the ones who had the mental aspect of the game down, but didn't have the physical tools. The HoF players that became coaches?

Mike Singletary is proving to be a pretty good coach.
Mike Ditka didn't do too bad either.
Bart Starr didn't do too well.
I think there are a couple of others... but success was moderate at best.

If Peyton becomes a coach... it'll be in the NFL with professionals. Does that happen? I can see it, but really only in the NFL.

Lets see, leave a humpteen million dollar job as one of the greatest qb in the NFL to coach UT for a few mil. Maybe one day if he gets bored driving his 50 million dollar yacht around in the caribbean.

The exceptions prove the rule.... For every Mike Ditka there are many Bart Starr's.....

Peyton would make an awesome HC for the Vols, we can only hope and dream once his highly toughted NFL career is over he would consider returning to the Hill.

Manning needs to steer Tony Dungy toward this job. Good coach, and an even better person. Just a thought.

I think there are players that could be a successful coach... but most choose the easy road and go into commentary. Either that or they're bitter and completely washed up by the game.

The only HoFers that have seemed to do well are guys that have changed their position drastically (Ditka at TE and Singletary at LB). The only two successful ones came from Chicago and Singletary was the MLB that anchored Ditka's run of success at Chicago in the 80s.

Jury is out on San Fran, but if they get a vet QB (rumors of McNabb) they can definitely make a run. Singletary has built a good Defense/Run game there.

Say what you will about George (he's certainly a grump and can be infuriating), but he is the best connected sports journalist in this area. He gives a fair shake to all of the local schools and has respect for their traditions. The list of former players, coaches, AD's, and journalists that consider him a friend is long, and goes back nearly fifty years.

As for his statement about Cut, he was merely giving his opinion based on what he's hearing from his sources and friends.

Peyton already has years of NFL coaching experience (face it, he's the de facto OC for Indy) and is pretty much a household name. If he ever was amicable to this idea, it would be several years from now when he's through with the NFL. It could be interesting.

I think Dungy would be a great coach at UT. However, it will never happen. Dungy is done with coaching. I could see Peyton as OC one day and then HC after that, but that's years down the road.My guess is Hammy makes a safe hire this time that can get through the next few years and then whoever replaces Hammy in 2012 lands the big fish.

well my thoughts,HC kids<qb>would flock to ten. to play for Peyton.if the qb's come, the WR will follow.
don't think Peyton would have any trouble at all with recuiteing.he could put a staff together that would make that Kitten green wth envy.
Peyton's been in the nfl for 12 years now,won a SB,4 time's MVP.he might think its timeto try something else.

I agree with the kids flooding the gates to play for Peyton but he's not ready yet he still has years in the NFL.

On him coaching.... pfft he's been coaching the Colts all year not too bad in my book...

Peyton has been very successful as Indy's OC for years now...
