Our new coach made the conversation in the CBS coverage of the SEC championship. They were talking about the firing of Tommy T at Auburn and Fulmer at UT. Manning was gracious but made his point that both of them deserved better. The sad thing was Tilman once again played the race card. He said that Kiffin seemingly came out of no where (did he?) and there were other coaches that were just as qualified who did not even get a chance. He made the same statement after the UK game using Charlie Strong as an example. It is my understanding that Kiffin was talked to early in the process. I wonder if Tilman will make the same coments about Auburn, Clemson, Washington and some of the "non-elite" programs? Were the same comments made when Florida hired Urban and when Alabama hired Saban? So the question that is asked is this: Was the Universtiy of Tennessee racist in the coaching search?

If you consider a candidate simply because he's black, you're being racist.

i think this whole question that keeps eing asked is rediculous, why even care about race if the school is going to hire the man they think will do the best at leading this team to victories?

You go after the best, regardless of race. I wish Tillman would quit thumping his chest about his past glory days. Bro, no one cares that you played in a NCG, and then played in the NFL. Your sitting beside one of the best QB's to ever play the game, just shut up.

I want someone from UT to go on ESPN and say "Yeah guys, we were being racist when we picked the best candidate we had to be our head coach. You guys make a really great point, so when I get done here, I'm gonna give ole Ty Willingham a call and see if he wants the job."

Racist. My God. The real question is.... Who cares? ESPN, CBS talk all you want. NOBODY CARES.

I want the best COACH we can get. If he's purple that's fine with me, just like the players...go with the best talent available, black, white, yellow or red. Reporters try to make a story of race all the time. It's going to be like crying wolf, when it really happens nobody will notice. Judge a man on his own merits...not his color.

I just happed to hear the commit and posted to get a reaction. I know that the comments were not made when Florida or Alabama made their last hires. Race should not enter in but it seems it always does. It is curious that Tim Brando did not bring it up.

It was brought up for Alabama.

Caucasian sportscasters rarely do unless prompted to be PC.

I concur, and thats an issue i have with the Rooney Rule, and the cries for something similar in the NCAA....

Not that i'm against blacks having opportunitys, but i think its ridiculous to parade a minority in for an interview when your mind is already made up, just to be PC.

If the best coach available would have been Lovie Smith then we might be considered racist, but since he turned us down, I don't see Charlie Strong as being as good as Lane Kiffin. Spencer Tillman has always been an idiot and he hates the big orange.

Spencer Tillman should be fired. Bringing the race card as his opinion as a broadcaster is just as bad as Jimmy the Greek insinuating certain characteristics about player talent.

This country will never heal as long as this attitude is predominant in the media.

Tillman actually said today that Kiffin was a "candidate out of nowhere". It's just stupid

I'm intrigued by the Rooney Rule coming into the NCAA. Can the NCAA tell a private school such as Notre Dame who they have to interview? I don't think that will ever fly. Yet, they could put leverage on a school that didn't participate and outing them as a "Racist School" in the media unless they agreed.
