UT Martin Baseball ?

I played at Jackson State CC and at Tennessee-Martin in the mid-80s, and, from a distance, it would appear that what is needed is a candidate like Corn, not Delmonico.

Delmonico's arrogant, left UT in a mess, and appears to me to only have interest in the job because he's 5 years away from retirement in the UT system. The school's not a good fit for someone who's going to act as though it oughtta consider itself lucky to have him in their midst.

Corn was a small-school player and coach, and he's done wonderfully at Columbia, continuing on from what Messrs. Painter and Hall started---they recruited me as well.

It'll be interesting to see what other candidates, if any, emerge.

There is an equally important story here, and that is:

why on Earth did the UT Martin president fire Cates at the end of the summer? what was the provocation that had materialized since the end of the year? why wasn't it done then? why hamstring a candidate pool by waiting til late July?

and why is the (admittedly buffoonish) AD making public statements that he and the president didnt agree on Cates' dismissal?

And, for the record, Cates is a class act...........they just didnt give him enough support.

Totally agree

I think also somebody higher than Coach Cates should also be fire.

I hope Coach Corn gets the job he will take care of the present players with respect, and will be very fair with everybody, I repeat Coach Delmonico will be a bad choice to this UTM program, Is all about Delmonico if he gets the UTM job plus I guarantee you he will bring his great friend pitching coach next year yes the ex Louisville coach

I hope they keep Coach Ebers happy I heard he is a great pitching Coach, I think the UTM pitching staff this year is in great hands with Coach Ebers. How many teams in College have the privilege of having 4 good young lefty's in their pitching staff ,I just hope they name the Head Coach soon.

Seems like most of the comments about Delmonico are right on. One positive thing to say about him is that is he won games in the SEC some time ago. Has anyone ever heard anything else good about him – as a person or a coach?? Plus he won about half the time recruiting to the best conference in the nation with a lot of cash to do it.

Corn is a less known but seems like he has done a pretty good job at the junior college level. But he took over a pretty good program and seems to have maintained and kept it going. Would seem a concern to not have a lot of Division I experience. Has some positives though.

The other guy mentioned Tony David from Samford. Read his bio looks like DI experienced, helped turn around a perennial loser, familiar with league and won OVC championship. At a mid major made it to the NCAA Finals of a Regional, I assume not a great budget with a football program at UTM level. A lot of guys drafted the last couple of years. Negative is no name recognition.

David seems like a good fit. Corn doesn’t seem like a terrible choice. Delmonico seems like a short term band aid.

The timing has to be today unless the Samford guy is going to interview

Here is my guess on the outcome.

Rod D won't be the hire. IMO the committee will see thru his motives or he will demand too much money amongst other things.

I hope AD Dane will tell us who the HC will be today the Kids deserve better and I hope is Coach Corn,,,,,,,Coach Goss coach Ebers and HC Corn will make a great team Guarantee you they will play 500 ball this year or better. Oh by the way I do not think Coach David will be a good fit at all trust me...All they need now is a 4th volunteer Coach that will work with the infield and hitting.

I totally disagree with the above statement, David is easily the best of the named candidates for this job if he is still in the running.

Forget about the assistants- they will get 1 year to prove themselves because it is too late to do otherwise right now.

All in all, the search committee has totally botched this process I think. Heard other names that applied, some that were mentioned and some that were not- they missed out on some good candidates who would have been a good fit.

Delmoico is the worst fit of those names still in play. You can bank on him cleaning house after season 1 players & coaches. I believe he will also bring in his son as an assistant.

Trying to tread lightly with this, because with some of these comments it appears some of the posters are relatives of team members. However, I don't get the notion that Delmonico is the only coach that is going to change things. Whoever the new coach is, there are bound to be coaching changes (though maybe not this year since it is so late in the game) and there are going to be some players that "leave" and are replaced by jucos. Whoever the new coach is getting paid to win and is going to do it how sees fit instead of what the previous coach thought. Change throughout the program is just the nature of a coaching change, never do you see a new coach plugged in and that be the only difference

I truly believe that UTM has not been fair with Coach Ebers, They bring him here from Delta State and they fired Coach Bubba now he is in limbo after this year that's very unprofessional. and yes I am a mother of one of the players that play for Coach Bubba for 4 years and I am proud of it, my son never played pro ball but my son is a great man because of Coach Cates if I had to do it again I will send him my son again. Thank you so much Bubba for teaching my son about life and been a great person, There is no price for what you have thought my son.

Nearly every college assistant coach is in limbo from year to year. There are nearly zero multi year contracts for them. Forcing the new coach to keep him is Utm showing serious loyalty to the guy IMO.

Thank you for your information you sound like an expert or from the UTM management ,but thank you for your professional input. But my question was not answer, Why would they bring a coach and take him out of the steady job he had when there were a possibility of UTM bringing another HC that's the question, to me that's not Honorable If these is true.... Not bruin obviously, but I don't think anybody can give you an accurate depiction of what has been going on in the heads of the UTM administration. They have turned the whole thing into a cluster**** (pardon my language) on so many levels. Starting with the fact that they did not make the decision on the HC following the baseball season. I think it is quite clear they aren't sure what they are doing

OPEN FORUM FOR BASEBALL HEAD COACHING CANDIDATE SET FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON

August 26, 2013
Printer Friendly Version
MARTIN, Tenn. – The general public and University of Tennessee at Martin alumni have been invited to an open forum featuring Skyhawk head baseball coaching candidate Tony David on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The session will take place in Room 111 (legislative chamber) of the Boling University Center from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

David recently finished his ninth season as an assistant coach at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., serving in the associate head coach role for the past eight seasons. In those eight seasons, the Bulldogs have had the six best seasons in program history.

Working directly under head coach Casey Dunn, David is the recruiting coordinator, infield instructor and third base coach, while also assisting with hitters. He helped guide Samford to two conference championships, as Samford won the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference title and the 2012 Southern Conference tournament championship.

David’s best season at Samford came in 2012, when the Bulldogs reeled off a school-record 41 victories, captured the Southern Conference tournament title and made the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Named the 2010 Southern Conference Assistant Coach of the Year by SEBaseball.com, David has helped recruit and develop the talent that has led to 13 Major League Baseball draft picks in the last three seasons, including 2013 first-rounder Phillip Ervin (27th overall).

Before joining the Samford staff, David served as an assistant coach for one season at South Alabama, his alma mater. The Biloxi, Miss. native graduated from South Alabama in 1995 with a degree in communications.

This thing is comical. The entire open forum stuff is ignorant and now they have let 2 candidates that took their names out of the running back in. Laughing stock!!

UTM must have a hypnotist on the search committee. That's the only logical explanation for how they are getting three legitimate candidates to go through this search process involving Open Forums with the general public........for a job that will be very difficult and only pay $60 to $70K.

I personally know two of the candidates and have met the third in passing. Here is my take on the whole thing. First I don't think that AD Dane had any intentions of moving Coach Cates out. That was Dr. Rakes decision, which accounts for the weird timing. I think that has been well documented on here. As for the candidates themselves....they all bring something different to the table. IMO the best candidate is Tony David. He has been a successful DI recruiting coordinator and knows the area that UTM will pull from. He is a well grounded coach and a tremendous person who would fit into the Martin area. He is coaching at a school that is very similar to UTM and has had success. Coach Corn has been a successful JUCO coach and would be my second choice but he really lacks the DI recruiting experience and contacts that I feel are needed to really turn it around. Coach Delmonico would be my third choice based on many of the things that have been said on here. I just don't think he fits into UTM or the Martin community at all but he is the most experienced of the bunch. I think all three will make changes to staff and roster in time. Some maybe more aggressive than others but change is coming. It has to the way that the program has performed the past decade. In response to the keeping of the current assistants. I do think that is a professional move and was needed. Both Coach Goss and Ebers will have a full year to prove themselves to the new HC. In the end Coach David appears to me as the best choice from a baseball and "fit" stand point. He would do a great job...

UTM will be making a big mistake if they do not hire Coach Corn he is the best guy for the job. That's my personal opinion and many other people I have spoken with today ,But Mr Dane I trust your decision, god help you make the correct the decision sir..

I played for Coach Cates at UTM. He is an amazing man, father, and role model. He has a great baseball mind but never was able to put it together because of the lack of institutional support. I believe the circus after the termination and how the termination was handled demonstrates with what he had to work administratively, which is to say not much at all. Additionally, after the wreck in 2000 and the fight that Coach Cates put up for his life, he is and was an inspiration to not only his players but every person with which he came into contact. It's hard to let someone go when they have that kind of moral character and intestinal fortitude. Although I cannot argue with the change in direction, it's disappointing that he and the team were treated the way they were. It's very unfair to terminate him this late in the process and puts the team and his successor at a severe disadvantage. It will be year negative 2 whenever the new coach starts. In any event, good luck Coach Cates, Ms. Ann, and the boys. I wish you nothing but the best for you; hopefully, the new coach and the team can overcome the administrative and financial obstacles placed on them and win an OVC championship for their biggest fan -- Coach Cates.

I totally agree with this statement, I hope the next coach gets the support that Coach Cates never got ,UTM management should be ashamed of the way they have treated coach Cates and the current players.(Shameful)

Agreed.

I played there as well, and have had some dialogue with Dane, as have had some of the guys I have played with.

Dane's the most bitterly distasteful, aggressively hostile administrator I can even fathom, much less interact with. Even the most benign inquiry provokes the most belligerent response from and I've told him before that neither myself nor my company will give the athletic dept a dime as long as he is the AD.

Witness the Bret Campbell fiasco.

I'd still like an expl as to the timing of Cates' reassignment.

Honestly, basketball is a joke (men's) now this...........what the hell is going over there?
