That 89 Auburn game in the rain was classic Hobby dominance. I was at a friend's house (AU grad) to watch the game. By halftime Greg was balancing his checkbook in the other room.So excited for Hobby. He is one of my all time favorites. Him and Hayworth were a great combo. Hayworth lived in Decherd, Tenn just a few miles from Tenn-Bama line. Hobby lived in Irondale, Ala just a few miles from the border and Dechard. Hayworth and Hobby both grew up on farms and there granddaddy’s used to tell Johnny don’t worry they are going to be too tired this summer to get lazy or into mischief. Majors said they were 2 guys that I always knew was going to arrive in shape. Welcome Home Marion Hobby! GBO
I was there, that was the one game I was part of going on the field. I was in south end zone and went out of stadium in the north end zone. It was a classic. Irondale, AL is not far from Birmingham, close to the middle of the state. Went to school there for the old Southern Railroad.Yes, that is where Tracy Hayworth is from. Yes, Decherd not Dechard my bad. Hobby is from Irondale just across the state line. They had a story one time years ago how they became friends and both went home in the summer to bail hay and other farm chores like tobacco.Their fathers and grandfathers always assured Majors they would be in shape when fall arrived.GBO
I remember the Barn recovering their onside kick and driving the ball, Marion knocked down 3rd down pass....Neyland was roaringThat 89 Auburn game in the rain was classic Hobby dominance. Oh yeah, he and Tracy Hayworth were swatting down Auburn passes that day like they were flies. Was raining so hard that day and it was the only time I ever stormed and splashed through Shields Watkins Field.I remember the Barn recovering their onside kick and driving the ball, Marion knocked down 3rd down pass....Neyland was roaring
Thats what I remember most about that game is how hard it rained (and how good Reggie Cobb looked that day).Oh yeah, he and Tracy Hayworth were swatting down Auburn passes that day like they were flies. Was raining so hard that day and it was the only time I ever stormed and splashed through Shields Watkins Field.
RIP Reggie Cobb.
