Irondale, AL is not far from Birmingham, close to the middle of the state. Went to school there for the old Southern Railroad.
I was thinking Hobby, lived close to the Tn-Bama border as well. The article was many years ago, maybe Hobby was staying the summer with Hayworth that summer in Decherd. Either way they were both friends and bookends and and spent summers on the Hayworth farm.

Irondale is in Birmingham. No where near the border.
I was thinking Hobby lived close to the border as well, the article was 36 years ago. My apologies for not having 100 percent recall. I do know they spent a summer on the Hayworth farm and the bookends were very good friends. GBO

Was Irondale further north back then?

No, sorry I didn’t have full recall from 36 years ago.A friend of mine has found the old article. It was about Hayworth and Hobby being good friends from different backgrounds. Hobby was from the city and Hayworth lived in rural Decherd, Hobby went and spent summer with Hayworth bailing hay. For some reason I thought they both lived close to the border but it was along time ago. Majors talked about how Hayworth’s father always told him don’t worry that Tracy would always be in shape come fall. It has been 36 years, they were 2 of my favorite players back then. Hayworth had a good career with the Detroit Lions. Hobby spent 2-3 years in the pros before going into coaching. So glad he is back. GBO
