It has been said around college basketball (fans, not major media) that UT has gotten lucky breaks, and played easy games in. So lets break down the sweet 16 and see how we fair. This is going purely by the numbers. This leaves out all over and under seeded debates. It also doesn't account for higher seeds gaining rights to start with lower seeds.

Florida- Beats 16 Albany and 9 Pitt

UCLA- Beats 13 Tulsa and 12 SF Austin

Dayton- Beats 6 Ohio State and 3 Syracuse

Stanford- Beats 7 New mexico and 2 Kansas

Virginia- Beats 16 Costal Car and 8 Memphis

MSU- Beats 13 Delaware and 12 Harvard

Iowa St- Beats 14 NC Central and 6 UNC

Uconn- Beats 10 St. Joes and 2 Villa

Arizona- Beats 16 Weber St and 8 Gonzaga

San Diego St- Beats 13 NM st and 12 ND st

Baylor- Beats 11 Nebraska and 3 Creighton

Wisconsin- Beats 15 American and 7 Oregon

Kentucky- Beats 9 Kansas st and 1 Wichita st

Lousiville- Beats 13 Manhattan 5 St. Louis

UT- Beats 6 Umass and 14 Mercer * and 11 Iowa

Michigan- Beats 15 Wofford and 7 Texas

So, by the numbers here is the order from most to least difficult path.

1(T).Dayton
1(T).Stanford

3.Kentucky

4.Uconn

5.Baylor

6.Louisville

7(T). Tennessee
7(T).Iowa St

9(T).Michigan
9(T).Wisconsin

11(T). Florida
11(T).Virginia
11(T).Arizona

14(T).UCLA
14(T).MSU
14(T).San Diego St

Basically, this shows we are dead center of the pack. So I'm not quite sure what all these other fan bases are talking about.

*I didn't include the Iowa game into my totals, because that is an additional game that no one else plays.

It doesn't matter a whit, we're all here regardless of path to arrive here. Win Friday and it still won't matter that we beat a 2 seed. Just that we are in the elite 8.

Basically, it's not Tennessee's fault that Duke lost to Mercer in Raleigh and based on how Duke played in March there is no guarantee that they would have been a tougher game anyway...none of it matters - Tennessee has beaten the teams in front of them and there is no extra credit for style points. Was anybody talking about Florida's road to the Elite 8 last year? It was a 14, 11 and 15 seed.

They may be weaker by seed but they're still tournament teams.

IMO if they didn't play us in the play-in, Iowa would be a Sweet 16 team.

Exactly, Iowa is probably ticked they missed the chance to play UMass and Mercer to set up a rematch vs Michigan.

Other than Umass we've played quality opponents, even if the number next to their names was relatively unimpressive. The thing to consider here isn't that we're winning, it's the way in which we're winning. We're obliterating our opponents in the tourney. Play-in teams don't usually do that. I think that's why we're making the buzz instead of dayton and stanford.

The fact that we also have an additional tourney win over ever other team in the field says a lot. We're forever going to be one of those prime examples people point to when the relevance of play-in games is argued

And they were a 6 seed. Which means the committee considered them to be one of the top 24 teams in the nation!

Who cares what other people think? We're playing good and should be focusing on Michigan. Not other people's opinions.

In reply to the OP,
If you think about it, if Duke had beat Mercer and UMass the way we did people would be saying they were one of the favorites. Dickie V (who I love) would be all "the Dukies are playing defense, I can't believe it, it's over ladies and gentlemen, it's all cameron crazies, shut it down, DUKE! DUKE! DUKE!, they're awesome with a capital A!!!" It doesn't matter who you've played at this point. It's the Sweet 16! You've had to play somebody.
