UT football over their $ heads?

If this coaching staff is a monumental failure, it will restructure how coaching staffs are set up in the SEC. I don't really think these hires are as big gambles as media types would like to make them out to be. Mike Hamilton's new nick name should be steinbrenner.

I have long felt that the HC's made to much and the assistants too little. Recruiting is a key, getting kids to want to come to a University. You have to set up for th elong run. With the staff in place so far, I think UT is donig that. Monte may not coach longer than 3 years, but if "O" is listening, then he should be able to step in. Problem down the road may be once UT is highly successful, how are you going to retain these guys without breaking the bank?

Enjoyed the article, as usual.

Griff, got any scoop on Chism's condition?

Funny thing about this staff's salaries is look at them compared to Bama's staff. Bama has like 7 of 9 assistants making 300k or more and Nick's salary is just a smidge higher than Lane's.

I guess Griff forgets the new SEC TV deal that makes coaching salaries like what we're doing chump change.

BOOOOOO to the local media crying over no radio interview every other day. Maybe if you weren't bad mouthing the man constantly, then maybe you would get an interview.

Mediocre money gets a mediocre staff. With Lane being an unknown, a strong staff is absolutely necessary.

And this is how college football is trending; with big name coaches making 4 mil now. Instead of getting a Gruden and "giving him 6!" we are throwing the big money at staff.

And you cant argue that this is anything less than an nfl caliber staff that has a very strong chance of paying for itself. Especially after tn fans have had to endure a Philip Fulmer circus that well overstayed its welcome. People are hungry, even starving, for success. And I know Im willing to pay for it.

My sarcasm meter isn't calibrated, was that sarcasm?

I thought Nick is making $4m and Lane $2m (first year).

Yeah, it was sarcasm. Bama's overally salary pool will be 2-3M higher than ours, yet we have people pissing and moaning about what we are paying.

Griff is a Fulmerite. He was supporting giving Fulmer another year to turn it around. That says a lot about his credibility IMO. Talking about throwing UT's money away. He would have gladly supported throwing more money down the Fulmer hole.

Lane could have had 3-3.5M if he wanted but he wanted to bring along an excellent staff.

no way lane commands those type dollars yet (w/o pops) 2.25 max on his own merits (so i guess we got a deal) time will tell.the gruden rumours were interesting and would have been neat to see them play out,but in his case, you snooze you loose.

its funny in a way,all the fulmer rumblings about just being a good recruiter.thats just the way this game is played.we are now focusing more so on recruiters than coaches (minus monte).

you bring in the stallions and your gonna win a bunch, regardless of who is on the sidelines.worked for fulmer in the 90,s and still working for miles in the bayou.

Precisely. It's like finally settling the argument about the sky being blue, only to be followed by additional pissing and moaning over exactly what SHADE of blue it is.

Thanks for letting me know there is no need to read articles Griff. Good Luck and Good Night.

I see no issue at all with the salary. CLK was hired relatively cheap specifically so that he could buy a great staff. This is a non-issue unless you're trying to sell newspapers.

Also, I'm getting tired of the media's sour grapes over anything Kiffin related. He's here. You have to cover him. Get over it. Lots of cheap shots are being taken that just come off as little kids pouting (Money, I mean Monte....It's obvious these are small market beat writers).

By the time our staff is finished being assembled, you'll be able to put it beside the other big time schools who have big time coaches and the entire salary for the staffs won't be much difference.

If Saban is at $4 million alone and Kiffin is at $2.5(ish) then that's basically an extra $1.5 to spend on assistants just to match one individual.

I think Tennessee is in the process of starting what will be known as a new trend with some schools. Get a head coach at a bargain and overpay for top notch assistants all over the board.

Interesting read..Just remember, you get what you pay for. I think UT is putting a Mega Staff on the hill right now and why any vol fan would be pissed off over the $$$ issue or staff issue, I just don't understand..

People want to complain about the money Tennessee is spending, but if they had lured Bill Cowher here and paid him $4-5 million a year, it'd be money well spent! It would have been like that for any bigger head coach that demands those kinds of figures.
