This is to all UT football fans, and the newly self-anointed basketball "fans"...

I know the football team sucks, and this leads to a lot of pent-up excitement for basketball season. I understand, but please pay attention to the following...

(I'm an arena donor, and have had the same basketball season tickets since TBA was opened in '87.)

Unless you're an alumnus of the University of Tennessee, or attended five or more game during the Wade Houston, Kevin O'Neill, Jerry Green, Buzz strech...stay the hell away from the arena this year. You're a bandwagon-jumping frontrunner. You're not an expert, you're not cool because you shout "BRUCE", and you're pretty obnoxious to those of us who sat through the awful years with <6,000 others game after game.

These people are not fans of UT basketball, they are fans of winning. This does not make you a supporter. And yes I'm talking to you dorks who pack the Bearden gym for the Pilot Rocky Top League. Just where have you been all these years?

Hey. I never attended a game until Memphis '05. I was a kid during those years you spoke of. I watched games, listened to them on the radio, liked the team and didn't care if we won or lost, because frankly, at the time I didn't know the difference.
Anyway, since my first game, I have went to every game possible(financially) and tried to take whoever I could get to go with me...
This year I have season tickets( and I'm wondering what's taking so long to get them) !!!
So, I didn't meet any of your requirements, but just wanted your honest opinion if I'm a basketball fan or not. It really means alot to me.
Oh, yea, I go to Lady Vols games too.

OK, obviously if you're a kid and your folks didn't go then that's different...I'm talking about the fat guy sitting two rows behind me from Morristown, calling players by their first names like a Lady Vols fan, trying to let everyone around him know how much of an expert he is because the Morristown U-12 peewees are 6-1 and he's an assistant coach. But he's only there for Vandy and Florida...

OK, I gotcha. Maybe you should have been more clear.
I'm not the type to get offended, but I'm sure you will ruffle a whole lot of feathers doing that.
And some will try to roast you, as well.
My parents were too broke to take me, but Dale Ellis did spill his coke on himself, in his new car at the drive thru window at KFC back in the day. My Dear Mother was working that window, indeed. I used to make her tell me the story all the time. I forget what kind of car it was...

be careful about including jerry green in there, he was one hell of a coach, with a great record, went to NCAA all 4 years he was there, won a ton of games, nationally ranked top 10 in the nation, and recruited out the ass...........his problens were not on the court.....
otherwise, agreed!!!

so would you rather have 5,000 supposed "real supporters" in the arena that don't do much but sit on their hands all game or have a packed arena with excited fans that make the games interesting and that have helped us go undefeated in TBA the past two years?

Look, to call out fans for supporting the basketball only the past 3-4 years is kinda ridiculous. These fans are part of the reason we have done so well since CBP has got here and to call them out on coming only because we have started winning isn't right IMO. It is like this all over the country. If the program is successful, people will show up, if it isn't, not as many people are going to take time out of their busy days to go watch a mediocre performance. Like it or not that is how it is, and it always will be. You should be happy that we are winning and that there are more supporters of the program now than there were during the times you were referring to.

A) Thinking the bandwaggoners are ridiculous and B) simultaneously being glad for their support are not necessarily two mutually exclusive propositions.

Never had the privilege of attending a game, but I did follow the team

I was a kid and watched every Jefferson pilot game I could, Those were some desensitizing beatings except for {The Great Allan Houston Slaying of the Mighty Kentucky Wildcats}.

But im not waiting for basketball, I want to see how the football team does win or lose

Seriously!?! We got Wade Houston to get Allen Houston. Kevin"Thank God There's A Shot Clock" O'Neill, Jerry"I'm Good for 20 wins" Greene and Buzz"I'm Likeable, and shucks MJ will give me a job" Peterson. I graduated from highschool in '85. I've been going to Lady Vol games for years. I don't care how much or for how long you've paid, you deserve some Guldens mustard right down your back. Long time ticket holders might pay the bills, but they also stomp on our enthusiasm! How offended were you when BP painted his chest? How offended were you when the winningest BB coach (men's or women's of all time)sang Rocky Top on top of a cheerleading pyramid? Get over yourself! Do you think they were doing that for your benefit? They want to include the young, old...they want to sell tickets and show recruits that Tennessee is a family, it's vigorously supported and an exciting brand of basketball to play and watch.

Are you serious with that drivel? Green couldn't coach his way out of a YMCA gym. I guess you're the bandwagon variety. Please learn BB before throwing that out there.

Allow me to take a wild shot in the dark.

After 1998 you were a HUGE football fan.

Where were you in 1988? How many times did your ass warm a seat during that 0-6 start? I was there for all of them.

How much UT merchandise do you own that says, 1998 National Champions? If you own even one item, then the term hypocrite fits you well.

Yep! All of us VASF donor football fans really suck.

Thanks for playing.

youre an idiot. youre the reason neyland stadium is so quiet.
the bandwaggoners as you would call them are what create a homecourt advantage.
i have sporaddically gone to games when i was younger during the houston and devoe years but havent. i am itching to buy tickets and go this year. (live in nashville) I will cheer and root for the team if that makes me a bandwagoner so be it i call it a fan, and hopefully i can create 2 new fans with my young boys.

even though I fit your opinion of what would constitute a "real bball fan" I find your post idiotic

The OP was just shortsighted stupidity.

Pearl's marketing and bringing in the frontrunner is much of what the recent rise of the program is about. The arena donor opportunity exists because the casual fan is now into the games. Otherwise, you and your 5,000 buddies could just watch in Stokely or prior form of TBA.

I'm a UT basketball fan first and foremost and I struggled through the doldrums, but that doesn't provide me with some silly badge of courage or right to thumb my nose at the new fans excited about what's happening with our program. Pearl's job was to get them here and he has done it exceedingly well. In fact, he's a better marketer than coach.

You beat your chest and pride yourself for your patronage in the tough years, but the outlook for this team would still suck without all of these new fans. If they bother you more than the line of schlock we had for coaches, you should keep your old ass at home so you don't have to watch them fill the seats that you paid for.

I was a young tot during the Wade Houston, Kevin Oneill Years, but my dad still took me to as many games as he could. I had the rare privilege of being one of the few in attendance at the Ole Miss game (Tenn won) during the terrible 5-22 season. I've always been a fan and have gone to an average of 8-12 games a year for the past 10 years. So, i guess I fit your description as a "True fan" - BUT your post is stupid. Idiotic at best.

I have one question - My Father used to attend games as much as possible when i was younger, (Devoe-Houston-Oneill years). Now due to Health reasons, he can't really attend games now, when BP has the program at an alltime high. (maybe 1-2 games a year)
What kind of fan is he? Is he a Reverse BandWaggoner?

I have been going to UT basketball games since 1970 when I was 12 years old. I have continued to go through thick and thin and have always supported my team, regardless. I have also frequented the Bearden HS gym to watch some great pick-up games. By the way, I went to UTK when Ernie and Bernie played together, and I have seen excitement from that perspective. However, my take on your comments is that Bruce Pearl would vehemently disagree with your premise of having only the "real" fans there. Would he rather have 6,000 fans, or do you think he enjoys the atmosphere that averaging around 21, 000 brings? Maybe you should ask him the next time you get a chance and come back and report to us.

So do yourself a favor and don't go.

Problem solved.

There will be plenty of bandwagon fans ready to make their donation and take your seats.

Where did this come from?

I have always followed UT Basketball through the kevin o'neil, jerry, and buzz days. I was a sophomore at UT when Hamilton brought in Bruce to the program. The excitement and energy to reignite and jump start the program and fans is something this University greatly appreciates. Not every fan is as dedicated as the next but at least they are a fan.

So maybe someone else should "stay the hell away from the arena this year."
