First of all, I want to thank VolNation for allowing me to join this site. I look forward to being a regular poster here and talking all UT sports with you guys. I'm in a tough situation right now regarding furthering my education and I am in dire need of some advice from people who have been here.

I am from a family full of Alabama fans (please forgive me) but I have always kind of been a neutral fan and just loved and followed religiously all SEC sports. I grew up in Alabama and always figured I would go to the U of A, but family conflict has prevented me from doing so. My parents divorced a few years ago and I just recently decided to move up here to Maryville to be with my mom and stepfather. My dad didn't take the news well at all about my decision to move up here at all. He basically said he will never talk to me again and that I can forget about him helping me with college.

He refused to send my transcript and and my information until recently so I've missed the application deadline at UT. I've decided I very much so want to go to school there and I am in love with Knoxville after attending a few basketball games there. I'm in a very tough situation right now and I need some advice. I will be more than thankful for any responses I receive.

At UT, is there a special admissions process of any kind? I'm more than positive that if I could talk to someone over there or interview with an admissions officer I could clearly tell them about my family problems and how badly I want to be at UT. The only problem is it is very hard to get a hold of anyone who can help. I've been trying very hard!

Do any of you guys know of any type of financial aid I could apply for this late in the process? My dad was the main person helping me with my college stuff but obviously I don't have him anymore and have little financial help.

For those of you familiar with Knoxville, are there any types of jobs that I could work around classes to help me cover tuition? Any information is greatly appreciated.

A great thanks goes out to anyone who responds. If you would rather respond to me by message, feel free to do so. I hate to post this on the football board, but I'm just a kid who really wants to get his life started out the right way and work to become a successful person. I do not have any support at all from my father's side of the family so I'm pretty much on my own with this because my stepfather and mother do not know a lot about the college process. I would like to add that I've met some very nice and courteous Vol fans at TBA and I hope that I, too, can become a good representative of the Vol family soon. Thank you all and God bless! Go Vols!

Good luck to you. I wish I could help, but my UT days were long ago and don't live in the area. I have not wxperienced what you are going through, b ut have had tough times with recent lay-offs. Things will get better, they always do. Keep your head up and keep plugging away. Sounds like with your attitude you will be successful at whatever you do.

I agree that if you can find the right person and explain the situation that you should receive special consideration.

:good!:

You haven't been able to get any answers from the admissions office? They have people there who are supposed to help with exactly this sort of stuff. Call them and see if you can schedule an appointment to come in and meet with somebody.

I don't know for sure, but you're probably out of luck as far as getting in for this fall. But why not just start in spring 2010? If you wanted to get a head start, you could go ahead and take a couple of classes this fall out at Pellissippi that would transfer in.

If your dad is cutting you off because he hates Tennessee, then he's an ass. Football isn't that important.

Your best be may be to do a semester at Pelisippi and then transfer next spring. As for financial aid, there is a ton of stuff available still, just look online and at the financial aid office. I'm sure there are plenty of jobs for students, as it is a college town. Also look into work-study, as there's a ton of that. UTK also has a lot of student jobs on campus. Most important of all, do not forget to fill out your FASFA, you can't even begin to deal with financial aid until you do. It takes about 30 minutes and you do it once a year.

*edit* Most financial aid takes place over the summer for fall semester. The only thing you have missed out on are a lot of scholarships. Pell grants and such are still available. Also if you're a Tennessee resident, you have a lot of available money to go to UT as well.

Thank you for your reply! I've grown very impatient with the admissions office. Believe me, I have spent many hours on the phone with people over there that have helped me out very little. One lady made me an appointment to meet her a few weeks ago, then called and canceled, and now will not answer her phone.

As far as my dad goes, he hates my mother and the University of Tennessee. He tried to make things very difficult for me. I just wanted to spend some time with my mom because I haven't got to see her as much as I would like over the years.

UT is also famous for something called "The Big Orange Screw" so I understand exactly his problem with the admissions office.

I currently go to ut so I could help a little. You need to show up in person at the admissions office, and schedule an appointment with someone. Going in person always beats talking via phone. I believe you still have time to apply. If not, like other people have mentioned take your first semester at Pelissippi. The hope scholarship should help you a lot financial wise. I have tons of friends who have tons of student loans to pay for tuition. Its not the greatest thing, but hey it puts you through college. As far as jobs go, there are plenty. Tons of organizations on campus that will help you find a job. Good luck to you. Everything will work out in time.

Thanks! I think I'm going to do just that tomorrow or this week. Taking my first semester at Pelissippi isn't a bad idea at all. In fact, that might be the best option for me right now.

"....there is just something about this place..."
Couldn't agree more.

I went to HS in Orange County, CA after living in VA for the first 11 years of my life. After a couple of years playing basketball at a Junior college I decided I wanted to go somewhere in the South for College. I visited all of my childhood friends at Virginia Tech, ETSU, Radford, etc and on my drive back to CA, saw A sign that said UT and I decided to stop and check it out. Did not know a single person that went there, but I, like you fell in love immediately. I don't know what it was specifically, but just knew that this was were I wanted to go to school.

Never regretted it and never looked back.

You WILL be a Vol one way or the other.

Sorry for leaving part of my life story here, but I really feel for this kid and am just trying to be encouraging.

UT is also famous for something called "The Big Orange Screw" so I understand exactly his problem with the admissions office.

I definitely remember that the undergraduate admissions office always seemed to be staffed by people who sure seemed like they didn't want anybody to actually get to go to UT. But it seems like it ought to be possible to wrestle answers to basic questions like "is there a special admissions process of any kind?" out of even those people.

Honestly, in this economic situation and your situation I would be looking into a community college for your first two years. They all have tracks that will put you right in line to go to UT and graduate without losing any of your classes due to transfer.

Pelissippi, Roane State (my old school), etc. I don't know if Maryville has one, but I'm sure they have a campus from some CC around there.

It would seem so. Believe me, if there is one they do not want me to know about it. lol That is what I was scheduled to meet with that lady about, but she canceled and now I can't get a hold of her. I will definitely explore every avenue available to me though.

I think you'll do just fine. I'm really saddened about your fathers attitude. He should realize you are his son and be able to put his animosity toward your mother aside and help you with your education. One day when he gets older he will regret how he is handling this situation. Anyway, like I said earlier you'll be fine and I would like to welcome you aboard the crazy train we call Volnation....

Having just graduated from UT not long ago, my advice to you, as many others have stated, is start at Pellissippi State. It's a much more forgiving environment and it will allow you to ease yourself into college life. (I took my Intermediate Spanish courses there.) UT can be very intimidating to some freshman because of the large class sizes for introductory courses and the demand of the professors for students to succeed. I think my freshman year only about 3 or 4 or my professors actually knew my name; they didn't bother taking roll since there were so many students. I would even go as far to say to take your first two years at PSTCC and then transfer to UT. UT and PSTCC have articulation agreements between the two schools, so if you keep your grades up you will have no trouble getting in to UT. You wouldn't be able to attend next Fall at UT anyway, as they have already admitted their quota for the year. Good luck, and don't forget to complete your FAFSA! I think it is due around June or July. FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Yep, all of that is spot on. Pellissippi would probably be the best route right now. It's a good community college, it's cheaper, and as stated the classes transfer easily to UT. Definitely fill out the FAFSA as well. I just graduated from UT and used all FAFSA loans to finance it. Good luck to you. I'm sure it will work out.

You are in fact my young friend, experiencing the "Big Orange Screw" as it is commonly called. It is striking that you have managed to get the screw even before setting foot on campus. Prepare yourself, this may be the first....but it will not be the last time you tangle with said Screw. However, with time, knowledge, friends, etc. you will eventually overcome the Screw......then 30 years later, after you've graduated and donated thousands of dollars to your beloved alma mater, they'll take your season tickets and move you to section QQQQQ Row 124 and have another go at you.

None the less, a community college is an excellent way to get some core classes out of the way while finding employment, chicks, cheap beer & gas, friends, until you can land yourself at the d@mn finest university in the entire US of A......The University of Tennesse! Amen, hallelujah, where's the Tylenol?
