His thoughts:

Both athletics and Faculty Senate report to President Peterson

He works well w/Mike Hamilton, good relationship, calls him a "straight shooter."

Said a lot of people don't understand that athletics at UT are self supporting and AD gives money to academic side.

The issue isn't between the Faculty Senate and Athletic Department

There was improvement between Facutly and Peterson, up until the 3 month Fulmer hiring coupled with the hiring freeze.

Considers the hiring an ethical and public relations mistake.

Believes he was given the job because of a pension or benefits issue.

Believes the position was going to eventually be announced as a long term thing, but doubts that will now happen considering the public uproar.

Thinks Fulmer made a bad decision and should step down.

Athletics do a ton of good for the U, doesn't like how the AD reports to the President, while at ALL other schools they report to "campus", Loren Crabtree was fired because he spoke out against this.

UT faculty has had many issues with Peterson, no confidence vote after Crabtree's dismissal

Previous presidents have been much more in touch with facutly, said "its hard to get through to this president"

8% approval rating for Peterson

Said Peterson is CEO of U, "the buck stops with him."

Said "the president's job is to promote "the cores": teaching, research, and service.

Peterson's job is in trouble

Initially 15% layoffs unclued only 65 lecurers, now tenured faculty are at danger.

In any organization, the leadership should take the hits before the ones below him.

Tough times nationwide, but the state of Tennessee is near the bottom, "in a crisis."

We have quite a few millions of dollars tied up in "Governers Fund Chairs", which have not been filled and he feels like could be used toward education.

The work on the Cherokee campus (golf facility) is a waste considering the situation

We have 17 vice presidents that all make over 6 figures with benefits including free cars

Issues concerning athlete tutoring have been fixed in his opinion.

Peterson has displayed bad leadership.

This ball needs to keep rolling. Petersen has got to go as soon as possible. I had forgotten about the Cherokee campus crap. That is the sort of thing that could be suspended for now to help make up the budget shortfall.

And 17 vice presidents? With free cars? What the hell is going on?

Nolt ought to watch out. The philosophy department probably isn't high up on the 'must-have' list.

I'm not going to say for sure that I know why the 3 month deal was made but I do know that generally it takes 30 years of service to become fully vested in the state's pension plan. Fulmer had a year or so around '73 then his stint from '80 to '08. It could be that the 3 months was what he needed to get over the 30 year mark?

Nolt is one of the brightest lights of the UT faculty, and commands a lot of respect. The philosophy department has already been gutted; if it gets axed completely, that's a big step toward becoming The University of Tennessee-Devry at Knoxville.

Someone needs to get control of the 'Good Ole' Boy' reins and fire the President and Fulmer (again). Can the governor/state not get involved since UT is a state institution?

I've taken a class with hi smart guy, but he's fighting the wrong fight here. Fulmer's privately funded job doesn't impact the current budget crisis in a negative way. If anything, he can drum up some donations during tough times.

If Fulmer's time is at issue give him a job in some other Tennessee department at some kind of minimum wage like other employees make with benefits. His retirement is a calcualtion of his highest years anyway and three months of a low paying job would not hurt him that much after all $173.00 an hour for four years aint peanuts...He should be able to survive. Even pay his own health insurance if he needs to.
