UT Facilities not on par with the best of the SEC

If he's talking about all men's sports, not just football, he'd be right. The baseball team has awful facilities but they are being renovated.

didn't they just finish re building the practice facilty and weight rooms? i thought much of the football facilities were upgraded not too long ago...i do seem to remember there being some concern over the ahtletic dorms though.....and with Neyland getting it's facade fixed, i would say that football wise, we have to be at least comparable with anyone in the league and probalby nation.

This sounds like "blah blah blah" stuff. Just a conversation piece. It is like saying we lag behind in attractive coeds: completely arbitrary, and in the end silly.

The only school that I would say have nicer overall facilities is LSU. If he said MSU he is off his rocker or basing it on baseball alone (and as mentioned before it is being renovated). Maybe Rupp is better than TBA but I don't really buy it either. Neyland stadium is up there and will be tops bar none once the renovations are complete. Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex (indoor practice field) is top notch; it was renovated and expanded a couple of years ago. If you wanna throw in new Swimming facility, soccer field, and softball field there is no way his comments hold any water. Low is just wrong on this and I am a big Chris Low fan.

Nail on head. The only thing we might be lacking in is Dorms. I would agree we need to do something about that because it would have to be important to athletes even though most only stay there for freshman year.

:lolabove:Now that's just blasphemous...

And about the Low thing, he is way off base. Having been in most of the facilities/walking by them everyday (and the fact that I deal with buildings plenty as an architecture major), this is crazy. They cannot be far behind, even if they are at all. Even the dorms are not bad. The freshmen athletes all live in Gibbs which was renovated just a few years ago and is, by far, the nicest dorm. I have several friends that live there and their dorms are nearly twice the size as mine. And that's not even to mention the incredible food there- all you can eat steak and shrimp, top notch made-to order sandwiches, and all the other good food there ought to make it easy to bring in recruits.:)

Of the schools that he says are really really nice: Mississippi State, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU were mentioned. I'm sure that's not an all inclusive list, just some that he mentioned.

It's pretty obvious that he just doesn't like the color orange.

Discounting Tennessee since I'm not exactly impartial....

The conference's other orange schools are also missing from his list despite the fact that Florida and Auburn are usually mentioned as being among the SEC's best facilities while South Carolina and Mississippi State are usually in the lower tier of most people's ratings.

For those disputing the claim, how many of you have seen these other facilities in person outside of the football stadiums? Low has no reason to make such a thing up.

He says as of right now that Tennessee is behind, not way way behind, but behind. Granted some of the upcoming improvements will certainly help.

He's crazy if he thinks the Miss State facilities are better

I've not, but our facilities are certainly not outdated or in a state of disrepair. I don't see how these other schools could have anything that is much better. Additionally, pretty much every other article discussing this subject has put UT at or near the top of the SEC.

I think every year someone in the SEC is building or upgrading their facilities.

Low said he was shocked by Mississippi State's facilities. I think they updated them recently.

I'm with holdemvol. Unless someone wants to dispute this that has actually seen (in the past couple years) what other schools have to offer, then I have to believe Chris Low. He's a Tennessee guy so I don't think he's going to make it up. Not to mention he was speaking to Brent Hubbs at the time and Brent seemed to agree. So......

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound William Ming attended UT’s junior day on March 1. He has also taken visits to Alabama, Notre Dame and LSU.

“Everything was extremely nice,” he said of UT’s campus. “I thought their indoor facilities were probably the nicest I’ve seen. Of course (Neyland Stadium) stands out because it’s just huge.”

DANG

I have actually heard this sentiment before. I thought that they had outlawed athletic dorms years ago. That student athletes had to be mixed in with the rest of the student population.

The football stadium renovation isn't even half way done yet! The indoor practice facility, new softball stadium, and basketball facilities are the only ones on par. The Tennis facility badly needs renovations as well as some of the track facilities.

If Mississippi St. has the best facilities than apparently it doesn't help in recruiting.

True- for Bball at least they had Scotty Hopson. Then he saw UT and bam. I'm sure it had nothing to with the fact that we are a top ten program and they're, well, not...:p

"I couldn't come up with one bad thing to be honest, "explained Ledford. Everything was amazing, and I was very impressed with the indoor facility at Tennessee it's the best I've ever seen. I also took in the spring game and that was a blast. The Tennessee fans are a very passionate fan base and they really got into the game for it just being a pre-season spring game which impressed me a great deal. I wasn't sure if I was going to go but defensive coordinator John Chavis made it clear from the start that I was a very high priority on their list and he made a very good push earlier in the week."

From Recruit Cody Ledford that was here just this weekend. Seems like he thought the facilities were nice.

When I went on recruiting trips and football camps in 1989-91, UT's facilities were the best by far. I also went to Georgia, Alabama, Vandy, Auburn, Ole Miss and Miss St. i'm a Bama fan and theirs were probably the worst at the time. Bama's weight room could have fit inside UT's at least six times over. It was a freaking dungeon down there.

The only thing Bama had that was good was a 100 yard indoor practice facility. When they got tired of running us to death outside we would go inside and they would kill us there. They had some serious upgrades in the past few years though.

UT's locker room, training room, 50 yard indoor facility, and coaches offices/meeting rooms were awesome at the time. I seriously doubt they have gotten worse over twenty years.

I think it's the total facilities he's comparing which includes locker room, dorm, indoor/outdoor practice fields, coaches offices, meeting rooms, etc., etc. If I recall, dorms were one area that Tennessee really fell short.

the dorms are pretty awful
