UT coulda had Spurrier

Go to USCjr boards & all u see is crap about sec east champs, sec champs, our offense can't be stopped. The point is it's similar to that every year around this time. They have 1 quality win. In a month there's a good chance the board will look like it does then every year. Spurrier needs to go, hes washed up, Garcia blows, etc etc etc..... I hate spurrier & USCjr & there's no way I would ever want him to coach here.

You are correct....Urban's connection is with Machen. It's been reported that Spurrier and Foley had issues (no support from Foley) and that is why Spurrier went to the Skins. I've heard the same rumor that Spurrier told Machen to check the trophy case when asked about his resume. Don't have a link.

That is classic.

5 years later he is at USCjr with 1 good win under his belt. Unless bama loses 3 or 4 more games.

in reference to a few posts:

Spurrier didnt want to Florida job because he was insulted that the AD insisted on him going through the interview process.

Whats Spurier's record at Carolina? Positve and better than our record over the last five years. annnnnddddd its at Carolina, a school with no history of winning. ever. and less resources. but we forget that when we need to defend ourselves and not poke fun at SC....

its very probable that SC will win the East this year. granted it has a lot to do with how down the division is this year, with the UF struggles and the immense UT and UGA dropoffs.

regardless, i dont see them any worse than 9-3.

I guess they could be 9-3 but I could see them realistically losing to Kentucky, Arkansas, Florida, & Clemson maybe even us. They're still USCjr.

Florida and Arky are the two I would guess they would lose to if they were to lose.

Kentucky "is still" Kentucky. I dont like our chances going on the road a week after getting our butts handed to us to Bama. Clemson underachieves and falls apart as often as SC. i guess they could potentially lose that one. 8-4 at the very worst.

In 05, there was a window when UF picked Urban over SS and before Steve went to SC. That also JUST HAPPENED to be the year CPF went 5-6. When Kiffin bolted for USC, Spurrier admitted that he would have taken the job in 05, but that it was too late for him to take another job now. We all witnessed what SS can do with some talent; as Carolina played near flawless football---with some of the talent Tenn used to pull from that State. WE could have been celebrating a big win over bama--

LSU could have also had Spurrier if he had waited two more weeks...

I'm actually with the OP here. Spurrier is one of my favorite coaches, and, if he has the right players/talent, he can win big. Oh well... that's water waaaay under the bridge at this point.

I will not count this season because it is not over and South Caorlina has a tendency to self destruct. With that said, Steve Spurrier's chickens do not have a better record over the last five years over Tennessee.

Tennessee
2009 7-6-0
2008 5-7-0
2007 10-4-0
2006 9-4-0
2005 5-6-0
36 wins(1-3 bowls)

South Carolina
2009 7-6-0
2008 7-6-0
2007 6-6-0
2006 8-5-0
2005 7-5-0
35 wins (1-4 bowls)

I'll give you that Spurrier never had a losing season in the past 5 years, but even with 2 losing seasons, Tennessee's record came out to be better.

I would give my right arm to have spurrier instead of dooley as a coach right now. And don't even say the lyouth and lack of depth excuse. Jesus I'm sick of excuses.

:lolabove: do you have a clue as to how football is played?? you cannot win in the SEC with the youth and depth issues we have. vince lombardi couldnt pull off a 8 win season with this team...nick saban wouldnt have a chance. youre tired of excuses...really?? a coach can only do so much with the hand thats dealt to him. give dooley some time..he hasnt been here a year yet, geez

Stop please stop...UF did not choose Urban over Spurrier, Spurrier refused to go back there...He was never even in the running for the UF job.

You are correct and Gator fans did not like the Meyer hire...They said his system would never work in the SEC!

One of the dumbest post i've ever read. Bless your heart, you don't know a thing about football do you?

Would you really want a guy who left the state of Tennessee after high school to win a Heisman for Florida as your head coach? not to mention the fact that SC has been mediocre the entire time hes been there. Threads like this dumb down the fan base.

LOL at anyone comparing SC to TN. The fact that SC has THE SAME record as TN over the past 5 years speaks volumes of the job SOS is doing. We consider that mediocre, but a program with a history of failure is another story.

SC has had meltdowns in the past, but they've never had a team this good. I just don't see it happening this year. Too many weapons.
