I have heard many sides to this argument and have asked a couple of people what they thought and got several different answers. So, I started digging and this is what I came up with.....

Charlie Weis of Notre Dame was paid $4.2 Million in 2008.
Pete Carroll of USC was paid $3.8 Million in 2008, as was Bob Stoops and Les Miles.
Nick Saban made $3.75 Million in 2008.

So let's take those number right there for a little perspective on our coaching staff, but first let's list CLK, CMK, and CEO's total salaries.....

Lane Kiffin = $2 Million in his first season.
Monte Kiffin = $1.2 to $1.5 Million
Ed Orgeron = $590K-$650K

So if my math is correct, those three coaches combined will earn between $3.79-$4.1 Million this year. Looks like we are up there with the Top Tier programs now in compensation and looks like we have three people right now on staff that could be head coaches. I hate to tell those complaining about it, but you have to pay people to get/retain GOOD coaches. We have arguably the greatest coaching staff in the nation.

In closing, I would just like to offer a bit of a suggestion to Doug Matthews and Jimmy Hyams, who were and have been complaining over the past few weeks about coaches salaries, keep your opinions to yourselves. We, the university, the players, and the fans, want to compete with the best and honestly I don't think we have ever been in such a better position to do so. Get over yourselves and either get on board or go root for Vandy or Bama. You obviously don't give enough if any credit to CLK for taking a paycut to get the equivelant of 3 coaches in one HC's salary. BTW, just think if we would have hired Gruden or Davis and the fact they would have commanded $4 Million or more each.

That must be base salaries you listed. I've seen figures for total compensation that puts Stoops and Carrol over $6 million. If I am not mistaken, the number you listed for Kiffin is total compensation.

That is correct. I just listed all salaries that I found to be accurate as of this season. I had heard the same of Stoops and Carroll of their salaries ending up like that. I don't think that they are complaining of where or who they played this year in bowl games. Even though Stoops lost. :)

Great post. We have arguably the best staff in the nation recruiting and coaching. And we are just paying the average for a top tier school.

To answer the production comments, I don't think we will have a problem with that this year. I don't think we will be where Kiffin wants to be next year, but give us 2 years and I think we become one if not the top offense/defensive team in college. BTW, Willie Garza's defense this year held opponents to 320 YPG and their team went 10-1, just an FYI for those who don't know much about him.

Nice take Eric, everyone gets tied up with the assistants salaries and forgets we are paying Lane 2 mil. By paying these guys more now, we make it harder for them to leave later. We have gone about hiring a staff backwards from the way everybody has done it.
Butch would have cost 4 mil.
Gruden would have been 5 or 6 mil.

We got a bargain.

fiction.... We are setting the market. If this is what the market will bear, then it is not out of control. If you want quality...ya gotta pay for it.

It's all about checks and balances, we are middle of the road with coaches salaries in college football. The allotted amount of coaches salaries are all budgeted within the athletics department.

i believe saban brings in 100 million revenue...so his salary is a bargain. weiss on the other hand is an andrgonist and does not bring in much.

We are setting a precedent on how to divide the payroll, but bammer does not understand this method because they are very unfamiliar with MATH !

My only question is how long will CLK be willing to accept cellar-level pay (for a program like UT) if he finds success? Is he that committed to his strategy of well-paid, top-notch assistants? Is he willing to continue to sacrifice in his own paycheck .... I'm going to go with no....that is when this could get out of hand.

If his teams perform on the field he will get his due. He still has money coming in from Al Davis to make up the diffrence right now.

UT's got plenty of cash. To beat florida and bama, they've got to spend big money on top coaches.

If he wins big, it will all work out. When Monte does leave we won't pay another coordinator 1.2 plus. I hope he stays at least 5 years.
